1 WNED Buffalo-Toronto War of 1812 Educator Resources John Craig, Ph.D. Vice President, Education & Outreach WNED Ontario History & Social Science Teachers’ Association 2012 Conference – Niagara-on-the-Lake

2 WNED Buffalo-Toronto performs both broadcast and non-broadcast educational programming Education projects that are tied to television program material use only those topics and subjects that are featured on the film Teachable moments are then researched and aligned to subject matter content based on current and emerging national standards and classroom outcomes with content teachers and experts from the field. Most, if not all, education content is free, downloadable, and extended to all educators, students, parents and community members. PBS Educational Services & Outreach

3 Considerations for the Guide included… Must facilitate use of The War of 1812 program content Length (most U.S. teachers have limited time to teach the War) Cross-border emphasis (worked with Canadian, U.S. and Native educators to hone format, style and content relevancy) Depth & Breadth (care taken to select “universal” themes that will resonant with many teachers & have wide application) Content knowledge (creating creative lessons that span many levels and correlate with learning standards and themes)

4 So, what exactly is in the Educator’s Guide? Enough engaging lessons, creative activities, cool resources and lavish graphics to make everyone want to teach with the The War of 1812!

5 Classroom Plans that… are congruent with bi-national learning standards historically accurate, relevant and useful use program segments and broad thematic strands integrate & honor diverse contributions are grouped “elementary, intermediate and commencement” for organizational reasons only

6 Activities that are… multidisciplinary (ELA, music, art, etc.) look for icons linked to specific quotes from either the program or noted authorities correlated to specific segments of the program technology-rich

7 Each lesson contains… suggested level time needed to teach NCSS standards & themes (U.S.) curriculum concepts & expectations (Canada) focus questions, performance indicators, assessment tasks key concepts list of instructional resources

9 In the back, you’ll find… supplementary online and print resources various teaching tools handouts to be copied (look for the green edged pages) technology ideas a really cool bi-national matrix of learning standards, concepts and expectations
