Agenda  What is STEM?  Overview: STEM EXPO  Q & A

What is STEM? STEM is the integration of math and science content matter using the engineering design process as the vehicle to solve problems and design solutions.

Engineering Design Process ASK IMAGINE PLAN CREATE IMPROVE Brainstorm what students know and what they need to know. Learn content and skills needed to solve challenge. Research and generate ideas. Identify criteria and specify constraints. Explore possibilities. Select an approach. Develop a design proposal using learned knowledge and skills. Make model, prototype, or process. Test and evaluate the design using specifications. Collect data. Refine the design. Create or make a solution. Communicate processes and results. Define the need or problem. The Engineering Design Process CMCSS, July 2011 TN Science Curriculum; Adapted with permission from Engineering is Elementary, Museum of Science, Boston This Engineering Design Process is cyclical. It is appropriate that students repeat the steps at any time during the problem solving process. The description in the text boxes can be used in more than one step, but it is imperative that all steps be used.

Overview: STEM EXPO  The STEM EXPO: Student teams use the engineering design process to solve a “real” problem in context of science and mathematics  Event is an opportunity for teams to showcase, talk about the problem solution and get feedback from STEM professionals.  Students in teams from STEM classes  Engineering Notebook required at event

Participants: STEM EXPO  Maximum of one team per grade per school (up to 4 students)  Grades 3-9  Criteria for selection: up to the teachers in the school  April 4, 2014: Team Selection(s) forwarded to APSU Jack Hunt STEM Center

Details: The STEM EXPO  May 5, 2014, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM Middle/High Schools May 6, 2014, 5:00 – 8:00 Elementary Schools  APSU Red Barn/Memorial Health Building Gymnasium  Parents of Elementary students will wait in the UC Ballroom

Schedule: STEM EXPO  6:00 PM –7:00 PM project review by STEM Professionals – teachers, students, and STEM professionals  7:00 PM –8:00 PM Public viewing of STEM projects – parents

Website: STEM EXPO  http://www.apsu.edu/stem/great-stem- challenge-exposition-0 http://www.apsu.edu/stem/great-stem- challenge-exposition-0  Participant checklist  Team Selection Form  Display checklist  Parent Permission letter

STEM Challenge EXPO Participant Check List Be sure to:  _____ Include “Ask, Brainstorm, Plan, Create, Improve”  _____ Label every chart, graph and illustration?  _____ Provide a caption for every photograph?  _____ Check every word on your display board? Twice!  _____ Use a ruler to check that each part of the display is straight and neat.  _____ Did you follow all rules and guidelines?  _____ Bring a “repair kit” of supplies for any last-minute touch-ups.

STEM Challenge EXPO Display Check List YOU SHOULD BRING A BOARD (DISPLAYING THE FOLLOWING) AND YOUR ENGINEERING NOTEBOOKS. The model of the problem solution is an option. If you do bring it, it must fit on the table in front of your board. Plan on a table that measures 3’ x 3’. The following information must be on your team’s board:  Project title  Names of team members  Your Question  Summary of your background research (with references)  Plans  Design  Photograph or graphic display of model  Data collected organized as a table &/or graph*  Area for improvement – which may be a list  Ideas for real world applications  *Graphics (examples): Photographs Diagrams Chart Graph

STEM Challenge EXPO Display Check List (continued) Engineering Notebook (required): This is to be the original notebook used in class, not a new or re-written notebook.)  All pages included. Pages numbered.  Research with references  Working ideas included.  Journal of progress in solving problem.  Other new ideas.  Areas that may not have worked out, and suggestions for improvement.  Ideas for how this can be used in the “real world”  Additional optional items for display table:  Tablecloth (optional)  Model(s) (optional)  Photo album

STEM Challenge EXPO Parent permission Letter Dear Parents, Your child’s STEM Team was selected to present his/her STEM Challenge completed in class in the STEM Challenge EXPO at Austin Peay State University on May 5 th (grades6-9) and May 6 th (grades3-5), from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Each member of the team is required to be present and he or she must have the Engineering Design Notebook as part of the presentation. APSU faculty and STEM professionals will talk to each team sometime between 6:00 and 7:00 PM about the STEM Challenge and provide feedback to them. You are asked to bring your child to the Dunn Center by 5:00 PM for project set-up; you will be able to visit each presentation from 7:00 – 8:00 PM. Your child’s teacher will be there with the team. If your child has your permission to participate, please sign the line below and have your child return your permission to his/her teacher by _____________________. Thank you for your support! Sincerely yours, Return this slip to your teacher. Permission: _________________________ has my permission to attend the APSU STEM Challenge EXPO at Austin Peay State University on May 5 or 6 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. I understand that I will provide transportation and remain at the event until ending. _______________________________________________________ signaturedate I also give my permission for photographs of my child to be used for publicity purposes on APSU website, in brochures, or other means of publicity.
