3 World war II Joined US Naval Reserve in 1943
Assigned to Bureau of Ships Computation Project at Harvard Programmed for the Mark series of computers Remained at the Harvard Computation Lab until becoming a research fellow under Navy contract (1949)

4 UNIVAC & COBOL UNIVAC COBOL UNIVersal Automatic Computer I
Developed by Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation Developed first-ever compiler during this time – the A-0 System COBOL Extension of Hopper’s previous work, combined with influences from IBM Strongly believed that programs should be written in near-English

5 Retirement & death Retired from the Naval Reserve in 1966 with the rank of commander Returned to active duty in the 1970’s Promoted to rank of rear admiral (commodore) in 1983 Oldest active-duty commissioned officer in the Navy at time of final retirement in 1986 Consultant for Digital Equipment Corporation until her death in 1992 Buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors
