2 Background Born in New York City on June 16, 1909 Grandparents emigrated from Germany and Switzerland Great grandson of famous painter Severin Roesen Pursue Botany- Influenced by Tracy Hazen and R.A. Harper Life long interest in Botany and plants Whisky bottle- Changes of Phycology

3 Education 1929- Bachelor’s Degree Columbia University 1931- Master’s Degree University of Vermont (studied coccoid green alga Chlorococcum) 1933- PhD Degree Columbia University (researched green alga Protosiphon)

4 Jobs After receiving a Ph.D and carrying out research on the green alga Protosiphon. Mr. Bold sent 100 job inquiries and received two job offers. Great Depression Instructorship in Biology from Vanderbilt University  Starting Salary: $1,800 per year

9 Major Contributions Papers on: Methods of algal cultivation Co-authored text books on algae and morphology plant Pioneering studies on soil algae using culture techniques Co-authored 12 “PHYCOLOGICAL STUDIES” at the University of Texas Publication Major advisor for 10 Master and 43 Ph. Students.

10 More Contributions…… Dr. Bold and his graduate students discovered and described at least 75 new species of soil algae Popularized algae as food

11 Textbooks Morphology of Plants and Fungi  Most widely used general text book that was translated into many laguages. Introduction to Algae: Structure and Reproduction  discusses the distribution, reproduction, cultivation, classification, and fossil record of algae. The Plant Kingdom Phycological Studies  Co-authored with students from University of Texas  More than 11 dissertations were published in this series  Dr. Bold also contributed to various encyclopedias and was the author of 80 scientific papers

12 Bold Award  Established in 1973 to honor Harold C. Bold Competition for the Outstanding student research paper/ presentation at the annual meeting of the Phycological Society of America. The award consists of a certificate and monetary prize.  The information presented by the student must be that of the student’s in English and should be a complete or nearly complete study.  Students must submit an abstract and an ORIGINAL signed letter from the student’s research director to the Bold Award Committee
