Sexual Reproduction Involves the production of eggs be the female and sperm by the male. The egg and sperm join together during fertilization Zygote- a fertilized egg

Male Reproductive System Specialized to produce sperm and the hormone testosterone. The structures include the testes, scrotum, and penis Testes-Where sperm is produced Scrotum-where testes are located Testosterone-male hormone which controls the development of male characteristics

Male Reproductive System Sperm mixes with fluids. Sperm-contains the DNA to create new life Semen-The mix of sperm cells and fluids Penis-Semen leaves the body through this organ

Female Reproductive System To produce eggs and if the egg is fertilized, to nourish a developing baby until birth The organs of the female reproductive system include the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina. Ovaries- located slightly below the waist on both sides- produce egg cells and hormones Estrogen- female hormone triggers develoopment of female characteristics

Vocabulary Fallopian Tube- passageways for eggs Uterus- or womb, a hollow muscular organ. Once the egg has been fertilized, it stays in the uterus and develops. Vagina-muscular passageway leading to the outside of the body Menstrual Cycle-a monthly cycle of changes that occur in the female reproductive system Ovulation- when a mature egg is released form the ovary down the fallopian tube.

Menstrual Cycle During the menstrual cycle an egg develops in an ovary. At the same time the uterus prepares for the arrival of an embryo. At the start of the menstrual cycle, the egg starts to mature and the uterine lining starts to thicken. If not fertilized, the lining and uterus and the egg start to break down. The extra blood and tissue pass out of the body through the vagina. This is called menstration.
