Junior/Senior English April 6 and 7 ANNOUNCEMENTS GROUP WORK ON THEME RUBRIC Goal: to work collaboratively to discover themes found in the novel we read. To find text evidence to support the themes we found. This work will prepare us to write our Awful First Draft.

Announcements College application and scholarship workshop Tuesdays after school in P-3. Honors English assignment: find the essay prompt for the college or scholarship you want to apply for. Awful first draft is due April 13 or 14, (next Monday or Tuesday). Movie Party: make sure you participate in the discussion. Just being there isn’t enough to get you to Exceeding.

Rubric Review the rubric for the essay on theme.

Here’s how we find themes Think of the story of “The Lion King.” What are some topics that can lead to a theme? Example: Good vs. Evil ◦The author believes that

Group discussion Brainstorm topics for themes in the novel you read Turn the topics into theme statements (The author believes that:... ) Look for textual evidence to support your theme statement. Note page numbers. Break into pairs and do this exercise two more times on different topics. Share your theme statements with the others at your table. Take careful notes on this conversation and use them to help you in writing your rough draft.
