Gas, Hybrid, And Alternative Fuels Matthew Clayton English 1010
2
Pictured in previous slide top left, Honda Civic, top right Honda Civic Hybrid, and bottom Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen powered car.
3
Which is better? Is there really a benefit? -Gas mileage -Eco friendly -Or nonsense
4
Facts about Hybrids Hybrids are powered by a gas engine and electric motor set up. Because of the electric motor the gas mileage is improved Battery packs supply power and are recharged by the motion of everyday driving. They don’t waste much
5
Hybrid downfalls The battery pack is expensive to replace The battery pack is expensive to replace Dealers are usually the only place to have them serviced and can be expensive Dealers are usually the only place to have them serviced and can be expensive Though the gas mileage is improved, its not always as good as advertised Though the gas mileage is improved, its not always as good as advertised
6
Facts about gas powered Been around for over a hundred years Used by billions of people world wide Used in many applications ranging from sport, recreation, business, and personal
7
Gas downfalls The price of gasoline changes constantly Some are not eco- friendly Idle time in city driving creates large amounts of emissions
8
Compare The 2 Gas Civic SI Mileage-25mpg Average fuel cost- $2100 Battery cost- $85 Purchase price- $22,405 Civic Hybrid Mileage-41 Average fuel cost-$1219 Battery cost- $2700+labor Purchase price- $24,050
9
The Civic Si compared was a 2007 model, the Civic Hybrid was based on a new 2012. The price of the hybrid battery is based on a local Honda Dealers price quote
10
Batteries The hybrid battery is thought to last around 8-10 years, an average car battery lasts 4-8 years.
11
Is there anything other than cars that are hybrid? Chevrolet makes a pick-up Many others make SUV’s
12
Many companies are making hybrid SUV options such as the Lexus RX, the Ford Escape, and the Chevrolet Tahoe. Honda and Toyota have a model that is only offered as a hybrid, the very popular Prius and the stylish Insight.
13
Alternative fuels o Hydrogen cell o Biodiesel o Plug –in hybrid o CNG
14
Hydrogen Cell Used hydrogen to power a “fuel Cell” that in turn powers a battery pack Used hydrogen to power a “fuel Cell” that in turn powers a battery pack Rumor has it only water is the by-product or exhaust Rumor has it only water is the by-product or exhaust Limited availability due to the lack of refueling stations Limited availability due to the lack of refueling stations
15
Biodiesel Can be made out of just about any organic material, usually crop waste oil Can be made out of just about any organic material, usually crop waste oil Cooking oil can be refined to make biodiesel Cooking oil can be refined to make biodiesel This is a very renewable resource This is a very renewable resource
16
Plug-in Hybrid Plugs in to a normal outlet to charge over night A typical charge will last around 20- 60 miles on just electric power Most Americans travel an average of 30 miles per day The Chevrolet volt is a good example of a plug-in hybrid
17
Clear Natural Gas CNG Burns cleaner than normal unleaded gasoline The technology has been around for many years It is much cheaper than gasoline and is readily available
