5 Georgia Perimeter College in Brief Largest associate degree-granting college Third largest institution in the University System of Georgia Six locations in metro Atlanta Fall 2008 Enrollment Total: 22,808 Minority Enrollment: 14,966 International Students: 3,727 Average Student Age: 25.1 years Programs: 38 Associate degrees, 4 Career and Technical degrees and 9 Dual degree programs with DeKalb Tech

6 Inspiration: Why? –Increase the number of minority representation in RN workforce –Improve graduation rates of minority students –Develop culturally competent nurses –Eliminate health barriers and disparities

7 Project Goals Recruit, identify and select junior and senior minority participants from four high schools to participate in Pre-entry Preparation Activities resulting in 112 participants in Year 1, 112 participants in Year 2 and 112 participants in Year 3. Increase the number of minority students applying to the pre- nursing program to 28 in Year 1, 28 in Year 2 and 28 in Year 3. Increase the number of minority students entering the RN Program by 14 in Year 1, 14 in Year 2 and 14 in Year 3 by providing Scholarships-for-Service to minority applicants to pre- nursing annually. Retain 70% of the minority participants each project year and thereby graduate 10 culturally competent RNs in Year 1, 10 culturally competent RNs in Year 2 and 10 culturally competent RNs in Year 3.

9 Examples of Career Development Program Activities High School: –Career Assessments –Healthcare professions Pre-Nursing: –Strong candidates: Nursing Entrance Test and nursing school application –Other candidates: Other schools, other healthcare professions, other careers, other choices Nursing: –Resume and cover letter workshops –Job Interviewing skills workshops –The Power of a Positive Attitude—this semester’s theme All students: –Nursing and Health Careers Conference
