Female Reproductive System

Parts of the female reproductive system Ovary – About the size and shape of a walnut, the ovaries hold a woman’s egg cells (ova). Egg Cell (Ovum) – A cell that is released from the ovaries once per month. If an egg is fertilised by a sperm cell, it will create a new life (a baby!) Fallopian Tube – Connects the ovary and the uterus. The egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube and it travels along the tube to the uterus.

Parts of the female reproductive system Uterus – Is a cavity within the female abdomen The uterus is where a fertilised egg will come to rest and begin developing into a baby. When the uterus contains a baby it is known as the womb. Cervix – The opening that joins the uterus and the vagina. The cervix is normally 7 - 8 mm wide but needs to open (dilate) to around 100 mm during child birth in order for the baby to exit the uterus.

In a normal birth, a baby must pass through the vagina to enter the world! Urethra – The urethra is a tube that carries urine from the bladder. The opening for the urethra is just in front of the vagina.
