2.  Down Syndrome ◦ Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46  Cystic Fibrosis ◦ a disease passed down through families. ◦ causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other areas of the body. ◦ It is one of the most common chronic lung diseases in children.  Allderdice Syndrome ◦ A local genetic condition (Sandy Point, in the West Coast of NL) ◦ Identified by Dr. Penny Allderdice at the Health Sciences Center, Memorial University of Newfoundland.

4.  Gregor Mendel ◦ Mid-1800s ◦ Experimented with inherited traits in pea plants.

5.  Francis Crick & James Watson ◦ 1953 ◦ Described the structure of DNA and how it replicates. ◦ Proposed the double helix structure.

6.  Genome: consists of the full set of genetic material that makes up an organism.  Made a map to identify genes  This information may be used to check for particular diseases. (ex. Allderdice Syndrome) Human Genome Project 1986-2003

8.  Human manipulation of an organisms genome using current DNA technology  Alters the genetic makeup of an organism  Has applications to many areas including the food we eat and issues related to health.  This has led to many concerns and fears both inside and outside the scientific community.
