RTW List two forms of energy. Agenda: 02/26/13 1.Diagnostic Test 2.Medical Biotechnology Presentations

RTW Read the 2 nd half of pg. 520 List two sources of energy. Agenda: 03/10/14 1.Energy Vocabulary and Pictures or sentences 2.Complete Energy Hand out

Nonrenewable Vocabulary Starting on Pg 520 1.Electricity 2. Strip Mining 3.Subsurface Mining 4. Petroleum 5.Petrochemical 6. Oil Sands 7.Oil Shale 8. Acid Drainage 9.Nuclear Energy10. Nuclear Fission 11. Nuclear Reactor12. Meltdown 13. Nuclear Waste14. Nuclear Fusion

RTW 1.List three ways you use electricity in your daily life. 2.Are there any negative consequences of your use of electricity? Agenda: 03/11/14 1.Energy Notes 2.Renewable/Nonrenewable reading

How much energy do you use in one year? We are going to be calculating our carbon footprints. Your CO 2 footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases you emit per year by burning fossil fuels and consuming energy.

Think-Pair-Share Evaluate the United States: Do you think it is fair that the United States uses significantly more than any other country?

Think-Pair-Share What are some ways we can decrease our carbon footprint? Write one goal you will work to achieve over the course of the unit to decrease your carbon footprint.

Think-Pair-Share What are some other energy production techniques? Are some better than others? Why or why not?

RTW 1.Define Electricity. (Hint: page 520!) 2.Why is it a secondary source of energy? Agenda: 03/13/14 1.Explain and Finish Questions on the Cookie Mining Lab to turn in. 2.Film “Gasland” with questions

Electricity Virtual Lab 1.Go to: http://phet.colorado.edu/en/sim ulation/faraday http://phet.colorado.edu/en/sim ulation/faraday 2.Click “RUN NOW!” 3.Click Pick-up Coil 4.Use the simulation to answer the lab questions.

Exit Slip 1.Explain why electricity is a secondary source of energy. 2.List AT LEAST two sources of primary energy.

RTW 1.Where does electricity come from? (Hint: Review from yesterday!) Agenda: 03/01/13 1.Energy Sources Notes 2.Tesla Town App Activity 3.Energy Sources Quiz HAPPY FRIDAY!!

RTW True or False: Electrical energy can be created with a magnet and copper coil. Agenda: 03/04/13 1.Renewable Vs. Nonrenewable resources 2.Oil Spill Pre-lab

BP Oil Spill Impact on Ecosystem: WildlifeWildlife

BP Oil Spill Oil Clean-up and containment techniques: Clean upClean up

RTW: Copy in your Notebook! Agenda: 03/05/13 1.Oil Spill lab! MaterialContainment Water Clean Up Oil Recovery Wildlife Clean Up Environmental Impact

BP Oil Spill It is April 2010 and the Deepwater Horizon oil rig just sank. BP is looking to hire a team of scientists with the best clean up plan. Working with your partner scientist, test 8 materials at their effectiveness at cleaning up oil.

BP Oil Spill Directions 1.Working with the person sitting next to you, test 8 materials and rate them on your data sheet (First twenty mintues. 2.Answer the four questions on your table. 3.Clean up your area. Rinse and dry your pan, put all the materials back in the basket (tell us if we need to restock anything), wipe down your area. 4.Start working on your Clean Up plan.

Oil Spill Clean Up Plan Work with your table (groups of four). Share your data and come up with a plan to present to BP. The plan must include a description of materials/techniques that will be used to: 1.Contain the spill 2.Clean the water 3.Recover the oil 4.Clean the wildlife 5.Minimize the environmental impacts on the ecosystem Write your plan on chart paper.

RTW List one advantage AND one disadvantage of using fossil fuels as an energy source. Agenda: 03/06/13 1.Present Clean Up Plans 2.Mining Pre-lab

RTW: Page 524!! What are the differences between strip mining and subsurface mining? Agenda: 03/07/13 1.Mining Lab 2.Coal vs. Oil Venn Diagram

Copy on graph paper Profit (Money you make)Costs (Money you spent) TOTAL PROFITS: TOTAL COSTS: TOTAL PROFITS – TOTAL COSTS =

Acid Drainage Occurs when sulfide minerals in exposed rock surfaces react with oxygen and rain to produce acid.

RTW Which of the following is NOT caused by the burning of fossil fuels? a)Air pollution b)Water pollution c)Release of carbon dioxide d)A meltdown Agenda: 03/18/14 1.Nuclear Note 2.Go over Gasland Questions

RTW What do you think? Agenda: 03/08/13 1.Wind Power Jigsaw
