THE PROJECT

PROJECT SUCH AS THE PORT DEVELOPMENT WILL HAVE A NUMBER OF IMPACTS TO THE AREA IN WHICH IT IS BEING DEVELOPED THROUGH THE VARIOUS PHASES OF DEVELOPMENT (CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION) INCLUDING ; BIO PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTAL – MARINE BIO PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTAL - TERRESTIAL SOCIAL IMPACTS ECONOMIC IMPACTS

HOW DO WE IDENTIFY THE IMPACTS

DETERMINING THE IMPACT MAGNITUDE Status of compliance with relevant Ghanaian legislation, policies and plans and any relevant Ghanaian or industry policies, standards or guidelines; the nature of the change (what resource or receptor is affected and how); the spatial extent of the area impacted or proportion of the population or community affected; its temporal extent (i.e. duration, frequency, reversibility); and where relevant (accidental or unplanned events), the probability or likelihood of the impact occurring.

CATEGORIES OF SIGNIFICANCE REMEMBER WE CAN HAVE POSITIVE IMPACTS AS WELL!

IMPACT ON TERRESTRIAL ENVIRONMENT MAIN AREAS WE LOOKED AT; SOILS GROUNDWATER SURFACE WATER PLANTS AND HABITATS BIRD LIFE FRESHWATER FISH AIR QUALITY NOISE AND VIBRATION TRAFFIC VISUAL CHARACTER

IMPACT ON MARINE ENVIRONMENT MAIN AREAS WE LOOKED AT; IMPACT ON UNDERWATER NOISE IMPACT ON MARINE MAMMALS IMPACT ON SEA TURTLES IMPACT ON FISH

IMPACT ON SOCIAL ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT MAIN AREAS WE LOOKED AT; IMPACT ON ECONOMIC AND PHYSICAL DISPLACEMENT IMPACT ON ECOSYSTEM SERVICES IMPACT ON LIVELIHOODS IMPACT ON SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE, SERVICES AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT CAPACITY IMPACT ON SOCIO- CULTURAL IMPACTS IMPACT ON HEALTH IMPACT ON TOURISM

Mitigation  Breakwater and the groyne will be built before any dredging activity is carried out.  Less rocks dumped during the early stages of the construction of the break water, this will increase gradually to enable water organisms become used to the change that would be occurring in their habitat  Dredged soil will not be disposed off at sea It will be used as fill on the onshore site  Oil monitors will be placed on vessels to monitor discharge and keep record of oil content to verify effective controls are in place.

 Put up proper drainage system  Silt traps to avoid choking of drainage systems  Waste from vessels would be dispose of at high deep sea making sure floating solids are taken care off.  Waste generated from the camp will be disposed off at a licensed waste disposal facility to avoid contamination  Compile and implement storm water management plan for construction activities

 Vessels and dredging contractors will ensure that collision is avoided and a distance of 100m is maintained between sea mammals and vessels  Fuel will be stored in a location dedicated for this purpose and tanks well-covered to avoid rain water from entering the bund.

 Limit the amount of destruction to the wetland areas and ponds  Minimise the siltation of ponds  A complete Livelihood restoration programme will be in place,  Training and skills development programme for those who will be employed by the port,  Developed programmes to facilitate setting up of self –employed business.
