Web 2.0 Concepts  Apps / Software  Platforms / Operating Systems Web 2.0 Learning Technology  E-Games/ Gaming Technology  E-Books / Digital Books  Simulations (Sims)  Web Quests  Podcasting / Vodcasting  Digital Storytelling  Blogs & Wikis  Social media & Social networks

Apps / Software Apps are “applications” which are small software programs designed for specific tasks or activities to be done using computers, tablets, smart phones, or other digital devices. Platform / Operating System: A large software program that integrates or manages many applications. Computers or smart phones have a specific operating system that allows certain apps to run efficiently on them. PCs, Tablets, smart phones all run specific operating systems that are exclusive (e.g. Windows 8 OS, Apple iOS, Android, etc.). “Web browsers” are platforms for searching and accessing internet websites (e.g. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Mozilla, etc).

Website (traditional): A collection of web pages that are created by professionals, and only allow reading or viewing of the information by users. Pages are static and allow limited interactivity. Blogs: A “Web Log” or tool (website) that allows an individual user to easily share news or information in a journal page format (by date with most recent on top). Wikis: A tool (website) designed to allow multiple users to easily share information and create content on web pages. Wikipedia is the most successful and largest website in the world – allowing anyone to create and edit pages.

Social media: the various technology tools that allow users to easily communicate and share information and resources via the internet. Social networks: Personal and professional connections among people that are facilitated or enhanced by internet sites such as Facebook or LinkedIn.

E-Games or Gaming Technology: Using computer (or video) games as a learning tool, where the scaffolding of material is made through various “levels” of play. Players advance through the levels based on ability, and gain “rewards”. An important emerging field in educational technology. Digital Books (E-Books): Reading material that is provided through a digital device. The book may be composed of text, audio, and/or graphic, or a combination of text, audio, graphics. It different from “video” because it is based on the spoken, written or visual language, and not a “moving picture”.

Simulations (Sims): Using computers to provide simulations of real-world events, activities, or concepts for educational purposes. Especially popular in math, history, science, and social sciences. U. of Colorado has a website dedicated to Educational Sims including elementary education. Web Quests: An inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web. It was developed at California State University in 1995. The organization website: Web Quest.org has everything teachers need to learn about and how to use Web Quests in classroom all grade levels.

Podcasting/ Vodcasting: Digital recording (usually audio) and uploading a file so that others can listen to it at any time. Term combines the idea of “broadcasting” with “pod” as a listening device, but it can be done with any recording platform or device. Idea became more powerful with popularity of iPOD. Now with easy Video recording and sharing (on iPads and other devices) is called Vodcasting. Voicethread is a free site that allows for easy podcasting and vodcasting (along with graphic and text presentations).

Digital Storytelling: Using computers or digital technology to tell stories. Digital stories can combine:  digital images: photos, graphics, or drawings  audio: voice, music  text As stories, they can be in any genre but focused on one topic. They usually run for about 2-5 minutes for elementary grade. You can make classroom stories, group stories, or individual stories.  Today’s Workshop – we will explore creating digital stories using the Little Bird Tales on iPADS.

Use these questions to reflect on Web 2.o Learning Tools. Write your response for Question #4 on your Day 2 Reflection sheet. o Which Web 2.0 learning tools do you find most promising or interesting to integrate into your classroom? o Which tool or tools look like they would not be appropriate for your class or school? o What obstacles would you face in integrating specific Web 2.0 tools?

There are many tools for making digital stories. Some very popular in elementary education are: Photostory 3 (free download from Microsoft ) requires photos or.JPG images ready to use. Does not require internet once program is downloaded. Can integrate music and voice. iMovie (Mac) or Movie Maker (PC). Also can be done off-line, and saved.

There are a lot of Internet Resources for teachers on Digital Storytelling and developing lessons. Check out the Workshop wiki: Digital Storytelling page.

A free web-based digital storytelling site, that allows young children to easily make their own digital stories, share and view them on- line. Check it out at: http://littlebirdtales.com/http://littlebirdtales.com/

1. Start with your grade level content standards. 2. Identify the learning goal(s) within the theme unit. 3. Identify an appropriate learning activity and match this with the type of digital storytelling tool you will use. 4. Break the lesson into component parts: Planning, Research, Storyboarding, Production, and Presentation.

Explore examples of Digital Storytelling Lesson plans on the Workshop Wiki, and browse the Little Bird Tales stories to get ideas. Recommended: “We Can Add Doubles” “Community Workers”

In small groups, work together to use the Little Bird Tales app on the iPAD, to create a brief Digital Story. You can take photos of things, people, or images then upload them. You can record your group reading the story. Publish then Present your story to the Class!

Use these questions to reflect on Digital Storytelling. Write your response for Question #5 on your Day 2 Reflection sheet. o Do you find anything useful for you teaching about digital storytelling? o Do you think your students would like to do a digital storytelling project? o What tools and other support would you need to make it work in your classroom? o What obstacles would you face in making a digital story?

When we return we will review e-Learning tools and then Create and Demonstrate a lesson. The class will peer-evaluate the Lesson plans using a Rubric.

You may use any tool or technology that we have discussed in this workshop, or others that you are familiar with. Design a lesson and a demonstration based on effective technology integration. Identify the grade content standard, learning objective, and NETS-S that you will achieve.

Be prepared to discuss how you would model the technology first. Explain what any special (external) support (such as parents, librarians, technology assistant) you will need to ensure a successful lesson.

 Use the Rubric to informally assess the lessons presented. Discuss:  Are these useful for you? Would you want to try it in your classroom? Why or why not?

Reflect on the workshop overall. o What have you found useful from this workshop? How can you use that information in your teaching?
