2 AIMS AND REQUIREMENTS To grasp the useful words concerned; To master how to meet a foreign guest at the airport and communicate with him; To know the usual expressions at a hotel.

3 Ⅰ. USEFUL EXPRESSIONS A. Meeting foreign guests at the airport Excuse me, but aren’t you Mr. Peterson from the United States? You must be our long-expected guest, Mr. Black. We’ve been expecting you ever since you faxed us your arrival date. I hope you’ve had a pleasant trip/journey. Hope you have an enjoyable/pleasant/nice stay here.

4 B. the way to the hotel The hotel is conveniently located. How far is it from the airport to the hotel? It’s quite a distance. But we’ll soon get there in twenty minutes. How long do you intend to stay, Mr. Smith? The city has a moderate climate and spring is the best season. The city covers about 100 square kilometers with a population of over 5 million.

5 C. Check-in at the hotel We’ll do everything we can to make you feel at home. Shall we go to the registry desk and fill out the registration form? This hotel is a five-star one in this city. At your request, we’ve reserved a room with windows facing South. The restaurant serves meals from 7 am to 9 am for breakfast, 11 am to 1pm lunch, and 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm supper.

6 Ⅱ. Dialogue Mr. Hansen calls the China World Hotel in Beijing to make a room reservation for two of his senior managers. The reception is helpful in giving him the room rates and making the booking. (The phone rings) O: China World Hotel. Can I help you? H: Yes. Could you put me through to reception, please? O: One moment, please. R: Reception. Can I help you? H: My name is George Hansen of LBC company in London. I’d like to book two single rooms for my colleagues. They must have fax and IDD facilities. R: When are you arriving?

7 H: On Sunday, the 24th of May. R: How long do they intend to stay? H: About ten days. Could you let me have the room rates, please? R: Yes, A single room is US $ 220 per night, plus a service charge of 15%. H: O.K. Could you make the booking for me, please? R: May I have the names, please? H: Yes, Mr. Reuter and Mr. Kent. R: Could you spell the name, please? H: Yes, Mr. Reuter spelt R-E-U-T-E-R. And Mr. Kent is spelt K-E-N-T. Have you got that? R: Yes, thank you, sir. We’ll be expecting them on the 24th of May. Bye. H: Thank you. Goodbye.

8 Ms. Lin, the secretary, and Mr. Wang, the manager, come to the airport to meet Mr. Peterson from USA. L: Excuse me, are you Mr. Peterson from the United States? P: Yes, I am. L: I’m Lin, the secretary of Beijing Textiles Import and Export Corporation. I’m here to welcome you. P: How do you do? Thank you for coming here to meet me. L: How do you do? Welcome to China. This is our manager Mr. Wang, he is also here to meet you.

9 W: Hello, Mr. Peterson. I’ve heard so much about you. Nice to meet you. P: Nice to meet you, too. W: Mr. Peterson, how was your journey? P: Well, not too bad. The air service was really pleasant. W: Hope you’ll enjoy your stay in Beijing. P: Thanks. I’m sure I will. W: Our car is waiting over there. Let’s drive to the hotel. L: May I help you with your baggage, Mr. Peterson? P: No, thanks. I can manage myself. Let’s go.

12 Task 2 Situation Mr. Green arrived at the hotel now. you, as the hotel clerk, come to welcome him and help him to check in as well as to make him familiar with the hotel service. The following tips may be helpful: Fill our the registration form and sign your name, passport number/ make or cancel a reservation/ health club/ gym/ the hairdresser’s/ the barber’s/ beauty-parlor/ business center / bar / café/ single room/ double room/ twin room with a bath/ facing the garden/ Welcome to our hotel./Wish you a most pleasant stay in our hotel./Have you had a reservation?/May I know your name and room number?/Please pay at the cashier’s desk over there./Leave your laundry in the bag behind the bathroom door. /Is there any place in the hotel where we can amuse ourselves?/Would you please tell me the daily service hours of the dining room?
