Outlook, games

5 Copyright 2012 by Janson Industries 5 Form Categories n Cost & rights u Proprietary: copyrighted & sold for a price u Shareware: copyrighted, free for a trial period & sold for a price (often nominal) u Freeware: copyrighted and free u Open source: copyrighted, users get source code, can change and distribute as they see fit, mostly free u Public domain: free n Can get a lot of these from web sites like u thefreesite.com, tucows.com

7 Copyright 2012 by Janson Industries 7 Starting Apps n Most users use the GUI and either u Double click a desktop icon u Select a list item from the Program menu n You can also issue commands through the command line interface

8 Copyright 2012 by Janson Industries 8 Starting Apps n When you run a application in Windows, you are specifying an executable file name n For instance, clicking the IE icon tells Windows to “run” iexplore.exe in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ u C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe is a fully qualified name

9 Copyright 2012 by Janson Industries 9 Starting Apps n If the fully qualified name is not specified, Windows searches the Environment Variable called PATH for locations to look for it n Let’s prove it. Start the command prompt u Start button, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt

18 Copyright 2012 by Janson Industries 18 Suites vs. Stand Alone n Buying each app as stand alone more expensive n But if you only need one or two, cheaper to buy stand alone n Standalone often have more functionality n Suite apps interact with each other better than stand alones n Suite calendar works with email and sends note to all meeting attendees
