2 RATIONAL RELIGION American religion is rooted in Puritan piety and Enlightenment rationalism The image of a stern God promoted by the first Great Awakening gave way to a more optimistic religious outlook Emphasizing man’s inherent goodness over depravity—Unitarianism

3 THE IMPACT OF DEISM Based on Newton’s notion of world machine Voltaire’s Master Clockmaker Built the universe, set it in motion, then left it on its own to function The main force governing the universe: natural laws, which are understandable by the power of reason

5 UNIVERSALISM While Unitarianism was for elite, Universalism attracted lower strata of society (wage laborers, the poor) Salvation of all men and women Agreement between Unitarian and Universalist: Unitarian: man was too good to be damned, Universalist: God was too good to damn man
