Streven’s (1988) splits ESP into two groups of characteristics Absolute characteristics: Designed to meet specified needs of the learner Related in content to particular disciplines, occupations and activities Centred on language appropriate to those activities in syntax, lexis, discourse etc. In contrast with General English

20 What are we going to teach? Before we decide to use our newly acquired knowledge and impress our students we have to find out what they know Why? You don’t want to teach them things that they know. You don’t want to use an inappropriate language level.
