2 Verb Tenses

3 Forms of verbs Every verb has three basic forms called its principal parts: 1. Present 2. Past 3. Past Participle

4 Present We live in a mobile society.

5 Past Automobiles gave travelers more freedom.

6 Past Participle Drivers have enjoyed this freedom for years. *Notice the helping verb have is used in the past participle form.

7 The Two Types of Verbs There are two types of verbs: 1. Regular verbs 2. Irregular verbs

8 Regular verb: A verb whose past and past participle are formed by adding –ed or –d to the present. Ex. Moved, traveled

9 Irregular verb: A verb whose past and past participle are NOT formed by adding –ed or –d to the present. Ex. Bring- Brought Catch- Caught Dig- Dug

10 Practice 1. Jana had run to get more marshmallows to roast. 2. Josh had already eaten two hot dogs. 3. Jona said, “I’ve gone on two camping trips this year. 4. Jana said, “I sang camp songs for Josh.” 5. Josh said, “I’ve fallen over this rock three times tonight.

She taught the students all about verb tenses.
