2 Definition  The participial phrase includes the participle and the object of the participle or any words modified by or related to the participle.

3 PRESENT PARTICIPLE  A present participle is a verb in the present tense, happen ing right now.  The verb has an --ING ending.

4 Create a participial phrase  To create a present participial phrase, take an ING verb and START your sentence with it.  Notice the placement of the comma ( after the end of the introductory phrase).

5 IMPORTANT!  Use a present participial phrase as a SENTENCE STARTER!!  This is called an “Introductory Phrase”.

6 For example:  Running to the door, I tripped and fell.  Tapping the marker on the desk, Frank annoyed me.  Feeling frustrated, Jill started to worry that she may not pass her Driver’s Ed test.

7 ALWAYS DO THE ELIMINATION CHECK!!!  In the elimination check, take out (or eliminate) the introductory phrase  (the phrase at the beginning of the sentence BEFORE the comma)  and check to see that the sentence is still complete.  Does it still contain a subject and a verb ?

8 For example:  __________________, I tripped and fell.  ______________________, Frank annoyed me.  ______________, Jill started to worry that she may not pass her Driver’s Ed test.

10 PAST PARTICIPLE  A past participle is a verb in the past tense, it happen ed in the past.  The verb has an --ED ending.

11 Create a participial phrase  To create a past participial phrase, take an ED verb and START your sentence with it.  Notice the placement of the comma ( after the end of the introductory phrase).

12 IMPORTANT!  Use a past participial phrase as a SENTENCE STARTER!!  This is called an “Introductory Phrase”.

13 For example:  Freed at last, the slaves shouted joyously.  Warmed up, the team ran onto the field.  Posted freely, tacks overwhelmed the corkboard.
