18 Other Possibilities The following locations are possibilities, but you can only select one in your top three locations as availability varies by semester and placements are not guaranteed. You are typically on your own for finding housing in these locations. Argentina (Lincoln School, Buenos Aires. Housing provided). Belgium (Antwerp International School, 8 weeks only). Spain (British School of Cordoba, American School of Barcelona, 8 weeks only). Bulgaria (American College Arcus. Housing may be provided. 8 weeks).

19 Other Possibilities Germany (Berlin Brandenburg International School. 8 or 16 weeks, housing very hard to find). Possible new partnerships starting Spring 2016: o Peter Gruber International Academy, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands o International School of Sosua, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

20 Alternate Locations Consideration will be given to other US locations, however, if we do not currently have established contracts, certain locations may not be an option.

21 Placement Process You will indicate three placement preferences on your UNI student teaching application. If you are interested in going to a location where UNI does not have a current student teaching agreement, you must also include two locations where there is an agreement in place. UNI cannot guarantee specific placements.

22 Who can take advantage of this program? English Social Studies PE Mathematics Art Sciences Special Education (international limited) Elementary Education Early Childhood (international 8 weeks only) Music ESL/TESOL Foreign Languages (be careful about request, schools in Spanish Speaking countries are not a good fit for Spanish Teaching majors as most students at the school are not learning how to speak Spanish as a foreign language) Students in good standing in any teacher education major, we have to consider GPA, NOC’s and advisor approval...

24 Application Procedures 1. Discuss placement possibilities with your local university supervisor and/or with a UNI coordinator. o Review the UNI Out of State and International Student Teaching website. http://unioosi.weebly.com/. http://unioosi.weebly.com/ o Review program requirements and fees. o Consider airfare/transportation, cost of living, insurance, passports and visas for where you are interested in going. o Contact a UNI Coordinator by email: oosi@uni.edu. Send questions or arrange for a phone meeting.oosi@uni.edu

25 Application Procedures 2. Submit the UNI student teaching application by email to oosi@uni.edu before the deadline.oosi@uni.edu o Applications are due by September 30, for spring placements or January 30 for fall placements. Students are encouraged to notify a UNI Coordinator of their intent to submit an application 3-4 weeks before the application deadline. o *Please note* You do not need to send application materials by regular mail. All application materials, including recommendations should be sent by email. The only item to be sent by mail is the deposit and final placement fee.

26 Application Procedures 3. Your UNI application (sent by email) should include: o Student Teaching Application o A letter of eligibility from the director of student teaching at your university. o Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement o Alternative Placement Policy o Web address for your professional website. o Application information and documents can be found on our website: http://unioosi.weebly.com http://unioosi.weebly.com o Please direct application question to Jen Beck: jennifer.beck@uni.edu.

27 4. Professional Website: Your professional website is used as a tool to market you to potential host schools. Make sure that it is a reflection of your professionalism, character, and related experience. Edit, Edit, Edit! o Home page with brief personal introduction and professional looking photo. o Additional tabs to include your Teaching philosophy Resume (include all field experiences and time spent in schools). Two recommendations or letters Copy of results from criminal background checks. (Be sure to black out personal information such as your social security number). o Do not include your student teaching application on your website.

28 Application Procedures 5. Send your deposit of $875 (payable to UNI) before the application deadline. o Send to: Jen Beck University of Northern Iowa SEC 509 Cedar Falls, IA 50614 *Please note: UNI will not process your application until your deposit is received. The deposit is non-refundable.

29 6. You will be contacted by a UNI coordinator within 1-2 weeks of sending your application to discuss placement choices and edits to your website. Students will be notified of placements as the information becomes available. There is no guaranteed date that the placement will be made. Students should be prepared to attend an interview (online) as requested by host schools.

30 Before Departure 7. Before departure for your international or out-of- state placement: o Submit your final payment for placement ($875 for 8 week placements or $1575 for 16 week placements). o Complete your exit interview with your UNI coordinator. Includes: Copy of flight itinerary Copy of professional liability insurance o Student membership in the NEA (www.nea.org). Cost is approximately $25.www.nea.org Copy of health insurance or travel insurance o Purchase CISI travel insurance. (international only). Can be purchased through UNI for $1.15 per day. o Submit your travel plans and emergency contact information in the UNI Travel Registry (international only, at least 30 days before departure).

31 9. After arrival on site: o Notify UNI Coordinator of safe arrival o Indicate any issues—housing, arrangements, etc. o Follow up with UNI Coordinator monthly by email. Communicate any issues as soon as they arise. o Optional: Send pictures, a postcard, blog posts, etc to share information about your experience.
