7 Sample Course Description INQUIRY SCIENCE Grade 8 Required: Full Year Homework Hours Per Week: 1 ½ hrs. This year long course will give students the background and skills they need to become knowledgeable, science literate citizens. Students will be engaged in inquiry driven learning processes that promote understanding of key concepts and connections among Life, Physical and Earth Sciences. The focus will be on the many different forms of energy and how those energies move though the various systems in Nature. Students will work independently, but also in group learning situations. Enrollment in this course is required of all eight grade students. INQUIRY SCIENCE I-II EARTH SCIENCE LAB Grade 8-9 Required: Full Year Homework Hours Per Week: 2 Prerequisite: 3.7 or higher cumulative 7 th grade G.P. A. and have successfully completed Math 3 (Pre-Algebra). For all requesting students, math & science achievement scores will be reviewed to make final placement decisions. This year long course will give students the background and skills they need to become knowledgeable, science literate citizens. This is the first in a two year plan which prepares student for state testing. Students will be engaged in inquiry driven processes that allow them to see connections among Biology, Earth Science and the Physical Sciences. Note: This a high school level course taken for high school credit. Eighth grade students will be in classes with 9 th grade students. The course is intended for honors level students who are interested in an accelerated science track in high school.

9 To Accelerate or Not? Things to Consider Self-discipline related to work completion, meeting deadlines, and managing multiple homework tasks. Balance. Does a schedule with accelerated classes still allow time for important extracurricular activities? There are a number of opportunities at the secondary level to enter into advanced learning opportunities. Two year commitment.
