4 Management 100 History M100 History The Problem - Strong academic foundation, but lacked real experiences and emphasis on professionalism and diversity. We needed a process designed to help new students grow professionally regardless of their starting point. We needed a avenue to engage student in the large lecture classroom of Nelson 3400.

5 Management 100 – Professionalism, Diversity, and Academic Success Professionalism o Business communications & email etiquette o Navigating unwritten rules of corporate o Networking o Professional Portfolio Diversity o First impressions o Diversity in the workplace o Support systems Academic Success o Degree planning o Time Management o GPA Calculating o Academic Consequences Diversity Academic Success Professionalism How do you make all of this happen? SNG

6 Poole students created the SNG model based on “Corporate affinity groups” Affinity groups, also called networking groups, provide forums for employees to gather socially and share ideas outside of their particular business units. Affinity groups bring together employees based on country of origin, racial, ethnic-background and gender- based affinity groups religion, physical disabilities, military service, age, sexual orientation and many other parameters.

8 What is the purpose of SNG? To foster a sense of community, belonging, and connection within the larger university, To build an awareness of diversity and inclusivity among students, To foster intergroup dialogue, Provide access to professional and student role models, and to give students opportunities to develop networking skills.

9 What makes a Student Network Group? 1 or 2 professional mentors from the community 1 upperclassmen Poole student mentor Small group of M100 students 10-15 Professional Mentor Student MentorGroup Members

10 Student Network Groups African-American American Indian Asian/Pacific Islander Commuter Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender (GLBT) Hispanic/Latino/Latina International Student o Students who have lived outside of the US or students who are interested in meeting those students International Experience o Students who have an interest in living and working in other countries Men Military o Students who are members or have family that are in the military Multicultural Non-Traditional o Students 25 years or older or students who are parents Out of State Religion & Spirituality o Students interested in interfaith dialogue Rural Women

11 Students choose SNGs based one of 3 criteria: You are a member of that group, You wish to learn more about the group, You are interested in learning more about the challenges and issues group members face. Make sure you are comfortable with ALL 3 that you select. Privacy Issues/Email Release at bottom of survey.

12 You role inside of Management 100 Class #1: Introduction to your SNG Class #3: Assist with Diversity Forum (Section 001 and 002 only ) Class #2: Assist with career coaching/resume preparation Class #4: Assist with the Portfolio Assignment

13 Other duties as assigned… Communicate with students outside of class o Contact list will be sent to you o Respond to student assignments o Introduction Email, SNG Event Reflection Emails, Online Portfolio, etc o Attend SNG events, if possible o If you miss a class… Communicate with other professional mentors Communicate with the Management 100 Team Communicate with your student mentors (See student mentor responsibilities)

SUCCESS Strong support system Shared experiences Strong networks past M100 New and diverse worldviews success Students completing assignments and the Management 100 course Students attending cultural events and writing in-depth reflections Students gaining professional etiquette feedback Big picture small picture

18 Where do we go from here? Connect with your Student Mentor o Utilize the pink planning sheet o Give your student mentor tasks for the first class Connect with your students via email o Introduce yourself o Share your background and why you became a mentor o Encourage them to bring any questions for you to class Attend class your first class on either September 5 th or 8th Utilize your resources – M100 team, SNG Portal, Student Mentor, etc.
