2 What is the Silk Road? The Silk Road. The highways of the ancient world. The Silk Road was 5,000 miles long. The Silk Road’s Golden Age was in the year 600AD.The Silk Road is not one long road. And it was not actually a road either. It was actually a series of trade routes that connected China and the Roman Empire. It was incredibly dangerous to travel along the Silk Road. Steep mountain passes and hot empty deserts with sandstorms made up the Silk Road. The Silk Road was so long that it took more than one month to travel the entire length. The Silk Road had many rest stops for traders or explorers to take a rest or eat a meal and sleep. At these rest stops, many traders communicated with each other. Chinese and Roman languages were spoken. Many new ideas were exchanged.I think Silk Road is the most dangerous trade route in the whole world.
3 Silk RoadThe Silk Road was the most important trade route in all of China. On the Silk Road they traded silk, hence the name the Silk Road. They also traded paper, bamboo, jade, gunpowder, woolen rugs, horses, glass, linen, gold, precious stones, spices, ivory, nuts, peaches, wool rugs, and tapestries. The Silk Road was not just one road. It was actually many smaller roads, pathways, and trade routes that were worn out by thousands of traders and travelers over a period of 400 years. The Silk Road connected China and the Roman Empire. The Silk Road was 5,000 miles long. By the way, the Romans knew China as “Sercia”, otherwise known as the “Land of Silk”.
4 Silk Road ProblemsChan Ch’ien, who was a Chinese traveler, developed the idea for the Silk Road. It was started by Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty. Its Golden Age was in the year 600 AD. But gradually, its trade started to decline. By the T’ang Dynasty, its trade reduced to almost nothing. It was definitely not in its Golden Age anymore. It was very dangerous to travel along the Silk Road. Bandits would attack the caravans and take everything they had. The bandits would either kill the people, sell them, or make them slaves. Pretty harsh, huh? The desert also posed a threat. High temperatures and sandstorms could wipe out caravans completely. A lack of water could wipe them out too. Some people would risk their lives to trade and travel on the Silk Road. I would never do that.
5 China’s True Trade Route The Silk Road was the most well-known trading route in all of China. It was also dangerous to travel along the Silk Road. The Silk Road was important for exchanging goods and learning about different cultures. Some people didn’t just trade. They traveled. You might have a lot of questions to ask. Well, you might be wondering about how long it was, where the Silk Road crossed over to, or what was it used for. So, I’m going to answer one of your questions. The Silk Road is 5,000 miles long. You might be thinking Wow! That’s really long! I can tell.Sometimes there is a sandstorm on the Silk Road. The Silk Road is interesting to know about, huh? Traders traveled it, and it could change them forever.
