Workshop: Maximizing your fundraising efforts through your student teams in the College of Engineering Wednesday, June 18, 2014 Rebecca Macdonald, Swanson Director of Student Project Teams at Cornell University Debbie Schroeder, Sr. Director of Development, The Ohio State University

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY Largest, most comprehensive public research university in the country –63,058 students enrolled –Over 6,000 (9%) international students –14 colleges on one campus Ranked 18 th among the nation’s best public universities 16 graduate programs ranked in top 10 Ohio State ranks 7th in public- university research expenditures programs –Ranked 1st among all American universities for private industry sponsored research

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Quick facts 11 departments 6118 undergraduate students Over 25 student project teams Six year graduation rate: 78% Nearly $156M in research awards 13% minority, 16.8% female, 5.9% international students engineering.osu.edu

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH Preeminent research center in sustainable and safe mobility in the United States 1. To provide world-class education for the next generation of automotive industry leaders, through on-campus learning and continuous professional development 2. To be a catalyst for innovation in automotive technology, through collaborative, interdisciplinary research 3. To support economic development, regionally and nationally Mission

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH CAR TIMELINE Honda, TRC, State of Ohio and OSU establish Transportation Research Endowment Program (TREP) TREP Charter leads to establishment of dedicated Center for Automotive Research CAR officially established by Office of Research and Office of Academic Affairs as Interdisciplinary Research Center CAR moves to 930 Kinnear Road Building CAR Industrial Consortium established SMART@CAR Consortium established CAR selected as recipient of multiple Ohio Third Frontier investments: 2009, 2010, 2011 CAR merges with Center for Intelligent Transportation Research CAR selected as site of DOE Graduate Automotive Technology Education Center of Excellence: 1998, 2005, 2011

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH The largest university-based interdisciplinary automotive research center in the U.S. A national thought leader in research related to Sustainable Mobility and Automotive Technologies. A leader in novel collaborative relationships with industry, government and non-profit partners. Increasingly engaged in economic development initiatives with TechColumbus, Columbus 2020 and ODOD. In the past five years engaged 45 companies and 12 state and federal government agencies resulting in R&D expenditures of over $37M. In fiscal year 2013 saw the participation of 92 graduate students, hundreds of undergraduate students, over 30 faculty and over 30 staff members. CAR TODAY

HUMAN RESOURCES

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH SYSTEMS OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH AREAS

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS AT CAR CAR maintains 3 consortia with industry partners CAR Industrial Consortium (1999-present) Focusing on automotive industry, advanced propulsion, intelligent vehicles, safety SMART@CAR Consortium (2008-present) Focusing on electric utility industry and vehicle-grid interactions and conducts sponsored research program with many major automotive manufacturers and suppliers. CAR also offers engineering services and testing to industry partners, leveraging its experimental facilities. CAR has been awarded 4 Ohio Third Frontier (OTF) technology commercialization projects CAR has served as an incubator and spin-off for two companies currently housed at TechColumbus: PlugSmart, and CAR Technologies LLC Recognition: 2011 Innovation Award for Outstanding Technology Team from TechColumbus

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH One example: U.S. DoE Graduate Automotive Technology Education GATE Center of Excellence, Energy Efficient Vehicle for Sustainable Mobility, in partnership with automotive industry: –Goal: to train a future workforce of automotive engineering professionals to overcome technology barriers preventing the development and production of cost-effective, high-efficiency vehicles for the United States market. –Sponsored by US DOE, since 1998 –Ohio State only university to have been selected in each of three competitions –Industry partners cost share and leverage DOE Fellowship funds –Program value: $3.5M over 5 years, 2011-2016 Multiple faculty and research staff involved in partnerships expand opportunities for students Opens opportunities for skilled internships with partners Programs develop highly sought-after students for careers in product engineering and R&D organizations STUDENT ENGAGEMENT WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS, LEVERAGING GOVERNMENT FUNDING

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH Workforce development and innovation Next generation of industry leaders, trained in industry best practices, are ready to work upon graduation Companies have access to top students for hiring and are familiar with their work Interns are easily identified and placed Increase in knowledge and resources Academic research specialists collaborate and network with veteran industry engineers, increasing productivity and introducing new methods and processes to solve problems Symbiotic relationships are created between CAR and industry to develop and commercialize technologies, and to meet the needs of more fundamental research that may be required in support of a commercial contract INDUSTRY BENEFITS OF PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH MOTORSPORTS & STUDENT PROJECTS Undergraduate students, graduate students Over 200 students participating at any one time Anyone can join! All majors, backgrounds, skill levels, and degrees of experience Compete on one of six teams: Baja SAE, Venturi Buckeye Bullet, Buckeye Current, Formula SAE, OSU EcoCAR, Supermileage SAE Students apply research and classroom concepts Learn hands-on skills for designing, fabricating, racing, managing, and marketing competition vehicles Some tools used: machine shop, engine testing, battery testing, computer aided design http://car.osu.edu/student-teams

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH Baja SAE Formula SAE Venturi Buckeye Bullet Electric Motorcycle OSU EcoCAR

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH Formation of a Women in Engineering-affiliated Supermileage SAE team Involvement of ten teams of students through senior capstone design from mechanical, electrical, and computer science Involvement of 100’s of students in experiential learning Supported the research of 14 graduate students Significant public relations and community outreach activities MOTORSPORTS FY 2013 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

CENTER FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH Tomorrow’s university will be different than today’s. Only those who thrive in multiple dimensions, not just research or traditional education, will succeed.
