2 What is the South Beach Diet?
A diet created by cardiologist Arthur Agaston Best-selling diet book Follows the phases and recipes in the book The South Beach Diet is a 3 phase diet The last phase is a life-long phase

3 The Process of the South Beach Diet
Phase One: Normal portions but restricts all carbs Last two weeks Emphasizes lean meats Examples: turkey, chicken, shellfish, and fish Expect to lose anywhere from 8-12 pounds Phase Two: Some of the banned food, (“good” carbs), will be introduced Expect to lose 1-2 pounds a week Stay on phase two until you have reached goal weight Phase Three: Maintaining goal weight with a healthy, balanced diet

4 Short/Long Term Benefits
No potatoes, fruit, bread, cereal, rice, pasta, beets, carrots or corn for the first two weeks of the diet Does not require calorie-counting and weighing food portions Weight can be lost quickly Weight loss is some-what healthy

5 Short/Long Term Issues
Phase one is considered “severe” or difficult After a long duration of being carb deprived, the body produces ketones which are leftovers from fat that is broken down in the body With enough production of ketones, the body starts to store fat Long term, this diet is tough on the body

6 Summary! The South Beach Diet is a diet that has three phases. The first phase is the strictest of the three. Once good carbs are introduced to the dieter, then phase two continues until goal weight is reached. Once goal is reached, then the third phase is lifelong, having the dieter keep a healthy weight and lifestyle. Benefits include fast and healthy weight loss. The only negative issues introduced is ketone production, (which is only caused by staying on phase one or two too long), and a severe first phase. Overall the South Beach Diet is a way to lose weight fast if you can stay committed to the diet.
