SIGNAGE Signs are around us all the time. From warnings of danger to the simplest of instructions they are about us all the time. In this project you will design a prototype set of signs that are informative, aesthetically pleasing and a good promotion tool for the client

Investigation Criterion A Investigation You are to give a four minute presentation to the class on how people get around in the modern world using signs to guide themselves. Your presentation in which ever form you choose to compile it, is to be uploaded to your wikispace. The URL is to be pasted below. For fun. Underneath each of the icons give a word or two to indicate what these sign might be telling someone. URL :-

Investigation Criterion A. Investigation You will be taken to a tourist attraction in Barbados that has poor signage. You will survey the site with a view to establishing what signage would be useful in the given situation. You will need a camera to photograph the attractions and the signage that is in place. You will need pencil and paper to make a sketch map of the site. From the data gathered, you will perform a needs analysis for the signage at the site. This will form the develpmental basis for your ‘Design Brief’ and the ‘Specification.’ The collected data is to be collated in a presentation document stored on your wikispace with the URL pasted below Design Brief. I am going to design and make something that will ………….. Specifications. The solution/ finished product will :- a. Be clear to all viewers b. Bright and fonts, colors and images are visually catchy towards observers c. Sign must be 25 meters, the right reading level and distance d. Sign is durable, structure is held on a pole, stable if hit (ware and tear) e. All 0f these points should make a bright, vibrant and sturdy sign

Investigation Criterion A. Investigation How will you establish whether or not you have been successful? Your criteria for success is laid out in the specification. But how can you quantifiably establish that you have succeeded. Write down below the details of the tests you would use on your finished product Testing distance, but sign at 25, 30, 35 and 40 metres away. Stand back, observe which is the most clear distance. Get a test sign, from distributors, see if the sign is worth the value, what you wanted is included, if the structure is strong enough Have a data table, see if the sales become higher, see if the sign has a affect. If the sign has played a significant role, in the changes of the buisness.

Design Criterion B. Design On paper, sketch out a range of different designs for your prototype. Scan the sketches and paste them below. Add notes to each sketch comparing the sketch to the specification, Descriptions: the flower would add a simplistic, vibrant feel to the logo, as for the Barbadian flag it adds a patriotic essence to the sign. The palm tree, shows the Caribbean aspect, and simplistic, beautiful feel, this will make viewers curious on the location. The cave, gives one a picture of the page, and the attraction, and shows what should be expected. The wave will have writing and the reason behind the wave is when the tide is high waves crash into the cave. The view from the animal flower cave was a idea because it shows the views of the anima l flower cave, and Barbados.

Design Criterion B. Design Make a detailed drawing either electronically or by hand, of your chosen design. Ensure that you include enough detail so that the design could be produced. Underneath the drawing, explain fully why you think this is the best design. I have chosen the flower design, due to it being the most simplistic design, out of all six. The measurement of this design, will be decided, when details are discussed, of what materials I am working with. Materials needed for structure and water proof appliances. How long the wood is, what measurements need to be included; minimum and maximum, and materials provided such as paint and protection coats, for the designing and creating aspect of my sign for the animal flower cave. This is the best design, because it is simple to draw, and if a more technical design was chosen, it would be hard to create on the wood material, and with paints and coloring tools. This design also symbolizes the animal flower cave, and the other designs may have become difficult for viewers to relate the animal flower cave and the logo, with.

Design Criterion B. Design You have the design itself, but there are other decisions that need to be made. Answer the requirements below. For each answer., explain why the answer is a suitable solution 1. What material will the sign be made from? 2. How will you fix the sign onto the wooden poles? 3. How will you weatherproof the sign? 2. How big does it need to be?

Planning Criterion C. Planning You now know what the sign looks like, what it is made from, how it fixes to the wall and how it Is protected from the elements. So how will you make it? Full details of how to make the sign need to be worked out. A pictorial storybook of how to make the sign and assemble it onto the pole is needed. You will sketch the different stages, scan them into this document and add notes to complete the story.

Planning Cont. Criterion C. Planning Remember to include a detailed materials list

Evaluation Criterion C. Planning Show here how you tested the product and came to conclusions about how well it worked. Remember to add your own grades against the different criteria.
