1 Quotes From Gandhi Quote 1 The world is weary of hate. We see the fatigue overcoming the Western nations. We see that this song of hate has not benefited humanity. Let it be the privilege of India to turn a new leaf and set a lesson to the world. Quote 2 The science of war leads one to dictatorship pure and simple; science of non-violence can alone lead one to pure democracy.

2 Responses: A) In the quote, “The world is weary of hate. We see the fatigue overcoming the Western nations. We see that this song of hate has not benefited humanity. Let it be the privilege of India to turn a new leaf and set a lesson to the world,” Ghandi stresses the fact that non-violence can solve problems. Hate only continues the cycle of violence, which only creates more issues and involves more people. He hopes that India will inspire other countries to follow his example so everyone can coexist peacefully. Additionally, “The science of war leads one to dictatorship pure and simple; science of non-violence can alone lead one to pure democracy,” states that conflict and fighting can only lead to war, which will lead to political turmoil. If a country wants to be successful, non-violence is the only answer to reach a pure democracy where everyone is equal and works together peacefully. B) In both quotes, Ghandi is trying to promote non-violence in both political and cultural components of life. Through both of these quotes Ghandi teaches us that violence can lead to nothing good, and will do nothing to help progress economic, political, and social aspects of a thriving country.

3 Response Cont. C) Throughout the history of British rule in India, violence was stressed in trying to gain independence. After many attempts such as the Sepoy Rebellion, Indians realized that violent attacks only gave the British more direct power. India chose the non-violent route by creating the Indian Nationalist movement. Through protests such as the Satyagraha, Indians proved that non-violence can make a difference and prove a point. These quotes were the basis of the movement. D) Today, the world is surrounded by turmoil and war. Everyday a new conflict leads to violence and nothing is ultimately being solved. It is apparent that war can never have a positive long lasting effect on a country, since wars continue to break out. We feel that if at least the United States uses our dominant power peacefully in a movement like the Satyagraha, it will encourage other countries to practice peace as well. This way we can all coexist peacefully as Ghandi had taught us.
