2. 2006 General Items Keep work area neat, clean & free of trip hazards Provide a location for each tool –Take tool out only when ready to use –Return it to location when finished –Reduces possibility of injuries by “passing tools” inappropriately Provide an area for work materials –Organization increases efficiency

3. 2006 General Items Tools are NOT toys –User ONLY as directed –If you are unsure how to use: ASK! –Start slow, then increase speed Drills, saws, screwdrivers Cut, Drill, Saw AWAY from your body when possible Use glue guns carefully –Unplug directly before use, re-plug when finished

4. 2006 Personal Protective Equipment Goggles –Must be worn inside work area at ALL times –Additionally worn when retrieving tools from outside work area –If fogging occurs, step away from work area and vent, returning when clear –Do NOT remove “plugs” on sides –Should fit over any prescription glasses

5. 2006 Gloves –Leather Check for fit –If you have questions about fit, check with coach Wear when using drill, saw, hammer (on hand holding nail), tape measurer –Nitrile Use when working with Epoxy. Personal Protective Equipment

6. 2006 Power Drill Do: –Keep bit out of drill until just before use –Make sure bit is properly locked in securely –Secure item to be drilled on workbench –Drill straight down or horizontally away from your body –Allow bit to pass completely though item being drilled –Use auxiliary handles Don’t: –Walk with bit in drill –Point drill at others OR any part of your body –Use screwdriver heads on drill –Use wrong bits Size Type (wood bit versus metal)

7. 2006 Wood Saw Do: –Measure twice, cut once –Secure item in workbench –Stand to side so blade cannot come in contact with body –Initiate sawing slowly, gaining speed as cut depth increases –“Saw through” object, stop when saw clears object Don’t: –Hold on lap, chair or between two people –Use wood saw for metal, PVC, superballs –Put pressure on “loose end” of object being cut, this can cause pinching and lead to loss of control of saw

8. 2006 Hack Saw Do: –Measure twice, cut once –Secure item in workbench –Use on metal, PVC, plastic tubing, superballs –Initiate sawing slowly, gaining speed as cut depth increases –“Saw through” object, stop when saw clears object Don’t: –Use on wood –Touch blade immediately after sawing –Stand directly behind saw blade –Hold on lap, chair or between two people

9. 2006 Hammer Do: –Use carefully –Hold item you are hammering yourself (remember glove on hand holding item to be hammered) –Use claw carefully, preferably holding so hammer will be pulled sideways (not toward or away from you) Don’t: –Hammer overhead (unless you have a hard hat) –Hold nails in mouth –Jerk claw end when removing nail –Throw or drop hammer, gently place on ground in assigned place when finished

10. 2006 X-Acto Knife Do: –Extend the knife one section at a time –Make sure the object being cut is secure (in a clamp on the workbench) –Cut in a direction away from your body –Use gloves, especially on the hand securing the object being cut Don’t: –Push the entire blade out, it will break off at one of the sections –Hold the item to be cut in your hand –Cut towards your body –Travel with the blade extended –Throw or pass knife, lay it down when finished

11. 2006 Screwdrivers Do: –Use right screwdriver bit for screw –Use glove on hand holding screw –Replace screwdriver back to original location when finished –Secure object before using screwdriver to insert screws Don’t –Attempt to put bits from screwdriver into drill, they will not fit properly –Use screwdriver as a hammer, chisel or any use other than installing screws –Toss or throw screwdriver

12. 2006 Tape Measure Do: –Use carefully, edges are sharp –Retract slowly –Place in original location when finished Don’t: –Toss or throw –Retract rapidly, edges can pinch or cut

13. 2006 Epoxy Gel Do: –Wear Nitrile gloves for application process –Follow instructions completely –Mix on surface OTHER than where epoxy will be used (paper plate) –Use in well ventilated area –Keep away from face, eyes, skin & follow emergency procedures if contact occurs Don’t: –Stand over epoxy while mixing –Mix on object to be glued –Ignore exposure to ANY part of the body –Remove plugs from safety goggles –Squirt toward body (yours or anyone else’s)

14. 2006 C-clamps Do: –Use in conjunction with workbench –Keep attaching assembly below surface of bench –Tighten easily at first, tighten slowly at finish Don’t: –Toss or throw –Use to attach to objects other than workbench –Cut or saw into clamps

15. 2006 Workbench Do: –Follow instructions –Use stops and positioning features for maximum grip –Use for securing any object you are working on with a tool Don’t: –Abuse (careful when cutting or sawing) –Get epoxy on bench clamps –Overload
