4 What Will We Learn? Introduction to Civics & Citizenship – An introduction to civics, politics, and the role of the citizen. Canada’s role in the global village in which we live and our role in global decision making. The Structure of Government in Canada: Levels and Branches of Canadian Government, Decision Making in a Democratic Society, Introduction to Canadian Law

5 What is Civics? Civics is the study of how public decisions are made about issues that are important to the world and of the rights and responsibilities of citizens both globally and at home Citizen: One who shares and enjoys the freedoms, privileges and responsibilities of a political region such as a community, city, town or country.

6 Common Good What is best for the community and all its members (because it promotes dignity, security and prosperity) There are costs and benefits to living in a community- you may have to give up some personal freedom to serve the common good (example?) To complicate matters we belong to many different types of communities- how many communities do you belong to? Think of all the rules you must abide by for the benefit of living in these communities
