2 Students Will: Explain why knowledge of law is important.
Justify the importance of voting in a democracy. Justify why laws and rules are necessary in society Distinguish between a rule and a law. Identify factors that might cause laws to change Justify, with concrete examples, the importance of law enforcement in our society. Describe how laws specifically protect individuals. In what ways do they protect society as a whole?

3 Law: Purpose and History
Everybody has a direct experience with it Law and legal issues affect everyone Incredibly important to know your rights and responsibilities

4 Canada and its Law Every country has its own history and culture that has shaped its laws and punishment Laws tell us about our past Laws reveal our current values and beliefs

5 Canada: Citizens elect law makers who make laws that suit the majority of Canadians By voting, Canadians choose politicians to make laws that best suit their needs and opinions at that time Elected officials control the law-making process and its interpretation and enforcement

6 What is Law? like rules to a game yet apply to all members of society at all times a legal rule made by the government someone who chooses to break a law will be punished Therefore: Individuals are free to do whatever they want, with one exception: You must not do those things the law forbids, or prohibits Those that don’t agree with a law can lobby the government to change it through joining a lobby or pressure group

7 Why Do We Have Laws? Laws usually create clear understanding about expected behaviour As society grows it needs more law to control and limit the behaviour of its citizens To enforce these laws, a society introduces punishments for breaking the law

8 The Function of Law: settle disputes peacefully and fairly
Establish rules of Conduct Provide a system of Enforcement Protect Rights and Freedoms Protect Society Resolve Disputes

9 Rules vs. Laws SO…what’ s the difference?
1. a principle or regulation governing conduct, action, procedure, arrangement, etc. Law = 1. the principles and regulations established in a community by some authority and applicable to its people, whether in the form of legislation or of custom and policies recognized and enforced by judicial decision. 2. any written or positive rule or collection of rules prescribed under the authority of the state or nation, as by the people in its constitution. 3. the controlling influence of such rules; the condition of society brought about by their observance: maintaining law and order a system or collection of such rules. 5. the department of knowledge concerned with these rules; jurisprudence: to study law.
