Activity plans Why are they important and how do we plan

Planning Are they age appropriate Do they take into account the children’s ability Do they cover all aspects of the Curriculum Is it differentiated (EAL) Are there any health and safety issues Do they encourage equal opportunities and diversity?

Advantages to planning You are prepared Other people can take over if you are not there Aims and objectives are agreed Children can help with the planning and create new ideas

Disadvantages to planning People stick to them so don’t allow for any flexibility Don’t allow spontaneous learning A child might want to take you in another direction

What type of plans are there? Long term Medium term Short term

Long term Can be a whole year or a term Provides a curriculum overview Meets School Devolvement plans (SDP) Includes advance planning (festivals, trips)

Low self esteem Look at Maslow pyramid Lack of security Being pressured to do well having high expectations Being criticised all the time Being compared to older sibling Family issues

Self esteem and self worth Children need to feel good about themselves Have a sense of belonging Feel valued Safe boundaries Unconditional acceptance Allowing children to express their feelings Managing success and failure Empathy (feeling of others)

Self esteem Activities must be challenging so the child does not get bored But not too challenging that the child will feel a failure You build on the child’s strengths Use praise and constructive criticism Observe the child in different situations, they may be good a certain things and not others
