2 Northbank BID Air Quality Briefing INTRODUCTION SITUATION Current level of awareness of the issue – an individual perspective Poor air quality in The Northbank BID is complex but broadly the result of emissions from: Transport (cars, taxis and buses) Buildings (gas from boilers) Supply chain (LGVs and rigid HGVs) There is a great deal of work already being done by the council, the GLA, TfL and DEFRA but not all targets are being met We need the help of the business community

3 Northbank BID Air Quality Briefing INTRODUCTION HEALTH IMPACT Poor air quality has a significant impact on our health It is not a remote issue but one very close to home and work: Over 4,000 deaths in 2008 in London were attributable to poor air quality Air quality in the Northbank BID area does not meet health based targets for some pollutants Air pollution in London is associated with cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary disease, lung cancer and respiratory disease Poor air quality can affect the lung capacity of young children The economic cost of the health impact of poor air quality in the UK has been estimated to be around £15 billion

6 SOLUTIONS THE GOAL To make and promote The Northbank as ‘the’ healthy place to live, work, visit and do business Resulting in improved employee and resident wellbeing Corporate Responsibility and reputation management The challenge and the positive output If you don’t know that it’s a problem you won’t look for solutions to improve the situation Any action we take has an almost immediate effect

7 Northbank BID Air Quality Briefing SOLUTIONS BUSINESS ACTIONS Communications – raising the profile of air quality to staff through policy and communications The Built Environment – reducing gas consumption and installing ultra-low NOx technologies Transportation – promoting walking and cycling alongside reducing taxi usage Supply Chain – reducing the number of vehicles delivering to your premises and the emission profile of their fleet
