3 Induction and Training Logistics All staff and volunteers should be provided with the school safeguarding policy on their first day, or earlier Induction must happen as soon as possible and must explain your school’s procedures If your whole staff training date is some way off, the new staff induction needs to be a full training session Induction should bring new staff ‘up to speed’ so they can benefit from subsequent whole school training courses The CPSC Ltd3

4 Why offer an induction? Staff should be given a mandatory induction, which includes familiarisation with child protection responsibilities and procedures to be followed if anyone has any concerns about a child's safety or welfare (Working Together to Safeguard Children 2013) All staff members should be aware of systems within their school or college which support safeguarding and these should be explained to them as part of staff induction. This includes: the school’s or college’s child protection policy; the school’s or college’s staff behaviour policy (sometimes called a code of conduct); and the designated safeguarding lead All staff members should also receive appropriate child protection training which is regularly updated (Keeping Children Safe in Education 2014) The CPSC Ltd4

7 How to plan an effective induction Check if your LSCB provides any advice Decide whether to induct a mix of roles or as discrete groups Remember you may be talking to an adult survivor Give it priority: Induction or training ‘slotted in’ when there is a gap is unlikely to be effective –SLT needs to give priority to safeguarding if you want staff to take it seriously Use a signed induction checklist Emphasise your availability to answer questions at any time If you provide a general Induction Pack, ensure all the key safeguarding information is in there Evaluation – how will you know whether it was useful? 8 For safeguarding training Develop aims, outcomes and programme Cover everything in your safeguarding policy Appoint a co-trainer, or ‘spotter’ Include learning from Serious Case Reviews Explain national policy updates Expand staff expertise, don’t just repeat the same course year after year The CPSC Ltd8
