4 ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENRAL TENDANCY MATH CONTENT STANDARDS FOR CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS: 6TH GRADE MATH STATISTICS, DATA ANALYSIS, AND PROBABILITY 1.0 Students compute and analyze statistical measures for data sets. 1.1 Students compute the range, mean, median, and mode of data sets 1.4 Students know why a specific measure of central tendency provides the most useful information in a given context

5 ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENTRAL TENDANCY GIVEN A REAL SITUATION, STUDENTS WILL DESIGN A DATA COLLECTION SHEET AND RECORD DATA IN AN ORGANIZED MANNER. GIVEN A SET OF DATA STUDENTS WILL: COMPUTE THE RANGE, MEAN, MEDIAN, AND MODE. CONSTRUCT AN ACCURATE FREQUENCY GRAPH THAT INCLUDES CORRECTLY LABELED AXES AND AN APPROPRIATE TITLE. PRESENT A CLEAR AND ADEQUATE REPORT SUMMARIZING THE RESULTS OF THEIR STUDY.

THE ACTIVITY WOULD INVOLVE AVERAGING NBA BOX SCORES.

14 ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENTRAL TENDANCY DESIGNING A WEB-BASED UNIT IS VERY TIME CONSUMING DESIGNING A WEB-BASED UNIT WOULD BE A GREAT ACTIVITY FOR GATE STUDENTS WEB-BASED UNITS ARE HIGHLY MOTIVATING AND EFFECTIVE LEARNING TOOLS FOR STUDENTS WHEN IMPLEMENTED PROPERLY
