Ice Breaker Directions: Pick up a ¼ piece of paper and answer the following questions. 1. How many Criterions are in the Design Brief? 2. Why is the Design Cycle shaped like a circle? 3. What is the highest score you can get on a design brief? 4. Explain holistic learning.

Design Cycle A: Investigate

A) Investigate is the essential stage in the design cycle! Students are expected to identify the problem, develop a design brief and formulate a design specification. Students are expected to acknowledge the sources of information and DOCUMENT these appropriately. Achievement level || DESCRIPTOR 0 The student does not meet any of the standards described by the descriptors. 1-2 The student STATES the problem, investigates the problem, and COLLECTS information from a source. 3-4 The student DESCRIBES the problem, mentioning its relevance. The student investigates the problem, selecting and analyzing information from an acknowledged source. The student describes a test to evaluate the product/solution against the design specification. 5-6 The student EXPLAINS the problem, discussing its relevance. The student critically investigates the problem, evaluating information from a broad range of appropriate, acknowledged sources. The student describes detailed methods for appropriate testing to evaluate the product/solution against the design specifications. NOTE: Design Brief: The student’s response to the challenge, showing how they intend to solve the problem they have been presented with. This will guide their investigation as they work to develop a more detailed design specification. ***Design Specification: A detailed description of the conditions, requirements and restrictions with which a design must comply. This is a PRECISE and ACCURATE list of facts such as conditions, dimensions, materials, process and materials that are important for the designer and for the user. All appropriate solutions will need to comply with the design specification.

What does it mean to investigate? research possible solutions & devise specific ways to test them Cite your sources (MLA style) websites books people

Specifics in your website Copy down the exact url. We want to know the specific page you found the information. http://espn.go.com http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/1428/peyton-manning

Discussing Relevance In a paragraph, you explain why the problem important? Life Society Environment

Required for Criterion A 1. State the problem 2. Mention relevance of the problem 3. Acknowledge your sources 4. Explain how you will test the effectiveness of your solution. 5. List all materials for your product.

Sample Design Brief Problem: How can I make a dessert that will win a bake-off competition? Having a baking competition is way to unite a community. It brings people together and allows them to share in the treasures of those who compete. This also impacts my personal life because it allows me to showcase my talents and improve my culinary skills. 9 Sample Design Briefs Tests: Taste Test: I will 10 people taste my cakes and vote for their favorite. I will have my taste testers rank the cakes first, second, and third. Appearance Test: Using the same 10 people, I will have my testers vote for which cake looks the best. They will rank them first, second, and third. Allergy Test: I will test my cake designs to see if any of them contain common allergens such as peanuts. Materials: Cocoa Powder Bittersweet Chocolate Chips Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips, Vanilla Extract Flour Butter, Sugar, Brown Sugar, Eggs, Water Salt, Baking Soda, Pam Cooking Spray Oven, Two 10 inch Cake Pans, Spatula, Kitchen Aid Mixer,

To score a 5/6 for Criterion A Copy the problem down VERBATIM Discuss the relevance of the problem. Have at least 3 sources & explain your sources Have at least 3 tests & explain what the test is doing Clearly list all of your materials needed for your product. ***Explain your product/solution***

Required for Criterion A 1. State the problem 2. Mention relevance of the problem 3. Acknowledge your sources 4. Explain how you will test the effectiveness of your solution. 5. List all materials for your product.
