2 SINGAPORE WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION ABOUT WHO WE ARE We were officially registered in January 2001, as an initiative proposed by passionate weightlifting fans in the sporting community. A small but brave group of volunteers (who were not weightlifters, but active sportspeople in their own rights) revived it, and took upon their shoulders to succeed in this challenge. SWF, a National Sports Association (NSA) under the purview of the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), was formed as a response to reviving a national body for weightlifting after a hiatus of nearly 10 years. This gap of time proved to be a formidable but not impossible task for the new team. We held our inaugural national championships in 2002, where we invited competitors from the Malaysian states. SWF contends that regional events enhance our competitive spirit and edge, as well as develops healthy relationships between weightlifting associations with mutual sharing of expertise and recognition for each other. Weighlifting is an activity that can be pursued by all, for general fitness, in support of existing sports conditioning programmes as well as a competitive sport. It is a core Olympic sport and features in all international and regional Games - Summer Olympics, Summer Youth Olympic Games, World Masters Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and South East Asia Games. The International Weightlifting Federation with its member Federations also organise various age group competitions annually.

3 SINGAPORE WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION OUR LEGACY From the 1950s to the late 1980s, Weighlifting consistently marked its place in Singapore's sports history by winning several medals at the British Empire Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and SEA Games. Most notable of these medals is the Silver medal won at the 1960 Rome Olympics, by Mr Tan Howe Liang. The was Singapore’s first medal at the Olympics level of sport. It would be another 48 years before Singapore achieved another Olympic medal. While the sport has been dormant in recent years, SWF established a new training centre in 2009 at 82 Jalan Benaan Kapal, catering to about 20 regular athletes and enthusiasts ranging from 16 to 40 years old. We continue to be focused on developing the sport by establishing clear development pathways for Athletes, Coaches and Technical Officials Our new generation of Athletes, Coaches, Technical Officials aspire to emulate and better, the achievements of our sport’s past.

4 SINGAPORE WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION OUR ACTIVITIES In the last 2 years we have been able to send our athletes overseas to represent Singapore in several significant competitions while also fostering our friendships with neighbouring Malaysia and Thailand, having been invited to their respective national events. Our athletes have also medaled in some of these events 2009 Youth Weightlifting Championship - 1 athlete 2009 Commonwealth Junior & Senior Weightlifting Championships – 4 athletes 2010 Youth Olympic Games – 2 athletes 2010 Commonwealth Games – 1 athlete 2011 Arafura Games – 2 athlete 2011 Asian Junior Weightlifting Championship – 1 athlete 2011 SEA Games – 1 athlete (appeal for a 2 nd athlete is being processed) Locally we have organised 3 editions of our Singapore Weightlifting National Open in the last 4 years, with the recent 2011 one also incorporating Powerlifting categories. We have also participated in community outreach programmes such as the National Orange Ribbon Celebrations 2009 and Student Care Services EMIT! Launch. Athlete Assessment Sessions are also organised on a regular basis (every 4-6 weeks) as part of our efforts to monitor existing athletes’ potential while at the same time serving as a platform for new athlete recruitment.

5 SINGAPORE WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION PARTNERSHIP OUR OUTLOOK We invite you to support and partner the SWF in our quest for sports excellence and to re-establish Singapore as a powerhouse in Weightlifting in the region. These activities represent the 4-prong approach we have taken to building 1) Athlete Development Pathway, 2) Coach Development Pathway, 3) Technical Official Development Pathway and 4) International Relationships: Maintenance of a Centre of Excellence for the sport, facilitating the training of enthusiasts as well as competitive athletes representing the country. Engaging quality coaches for local training. Engaging quality specialists for athlete support, i.e. physiotherapist, nutritionists, etc. Overseas training and competitions for athletes, coaches and technical officials. Athletes’ Training and competition apparel. Participation in outreach programmes to encourage participation in the sport. Organising and administering regular local events and national competitions to foster healthy athlete competition and public awareness. Organising certification workshops for coaches and technical officials. Organising outreach programmes for schools and clubs. We project an average budget of S$120,000.00 per annum for us to be able to organise and maximise the impact of our various activities. Thus, we are seeking public donations (as of Jan 2011, we are a registered Charity) via http://www.sggives.org.sg/swf as well as cash sponsorship – corporate sponsors gain branding opportunities at our training centre, website, Facebook pages, events and athlete’s training apparel - to aid our cause. http://www.sggives.org.sg/swf
