Magazine Unit Guidelines

Ads pages  There are 3 ads you must complete:  Page 2 & 3- Double Page Ad  Page 5- Ad  Back Cover (page 14)- Ad  Each ad needs to be a different product  All products must relate to your audience- think about who buys your magazine  Sports magazine: ads for deodorant, athletic clothing/shoes, cars (men buy sports magazines)  Celebrity Magazine: ads for makeup, perfume, TV shows (girls buy these magazines)  Food Magazine: ads for kitchen appliances, cleaning supplies, cat litter, etc (moms buy these magazines)  Cover the entire page. Ads do not stay in the margin. Pictures go all the way to the edge of the page  Use pictures off the internet, but you need to create an original slogan, product name, and product description.  Be creative with the ads. (use different fonts and colors)

Magazine Unit- Page 10- How to How-To- Page 10 Include pictures from the internet Include detailed instruction (in your own words, not copy-pasted from the internet) Look at examples of How-to’s in magazines to make your design similar. Design elements there (appealing headline, page layout, text, using different text boxes to create different texts) The how-to must match your target audience.  Sport Magazine: how to swing a bat, certain exercises  Seventeen-type Magazine: How to do a hairstyle, makeup, etc.  Food Magazine- How to prepare a difficult food (crème brulee, etc. )

Page 7-Must Have Picks/Trends  Page 7: Must-Have picks/trends (could be “Top Ten” page)  Look at examples of Must-Have Pages  Pick 6-10 items or trends to discuss on the page. (these are real items or trends)  Include a picture for each  Brief description for each (can include price, where to buy, etc)  Design elements are there: headlines, appealing layout  Examples:  Sports Magazine: Top Ten things to pack in your gym bag  Teen Magazine: Top Ten new trends this season (hottest scarves, skirts, hairstyles, etc.)

Page 8 &9- Feature Interview This will be the same person that will go on the cover. So this person needs to be related to the topic of the magazine. This needs to be written in columns (divide page into 3 columns) Pictures would then need to take up 1, 2, or 3 columns on page. This is in interview format. Go back and forth with question and answer.  Ask them about their success, their newest project, (teen magazines: their love life) etc. Include at least three photos of celeb. Each photo contains a caption (either under the photo or written over picture) Look at the examples of Features so that your design is similar. (Look at student magazine examples from last year, or examples on the bookshelf.) Design must be appealing.

Modular Design  Magazine pages have modules on them.  In the example to the right, there are two modules. One is Queen Latifah’s home, the other is about Danielle.  Modules are smaller stories on a page. This way you can fit several stories on one page. They are a designated boxed-in area.

Modular Design  To separate modules, you use space, colors, lines, and a separate headline for each module.  Notice in the example how they are separated by space.  Danielle’s module is separated by a different color: pink.  There is a line in between both stories.  Each module can have pictures, but they must stay in the designated rectangular

Modular Design  In this example, there are 3 modules: One for the Horoscopes, one for Seen and Heard, and one for Win it.  So there are basically three stories on this page.  There’s space in between each blocked area.

Modular Design  There is a line in between the horoscopes and the Seen and Heard module.  Each module is a different color: Horoscope- white, Seen and Heard-plue, Win it- pink

Page 11- Using modular Design  Can be any type of story you want that relates to your magazine.  Must include at least two modules.  So, this must have at least two separate stories (one for each module)  Separate modules with space, line, and color.  Include a headline for each module  Include pictures that relate in each module.

Pages 12, 13  Choose any type of stories you would like to do on pages 12 and 13  Ideas: Do’s and Don’ts, Advice Column, Horoscopes, articles that relate to your magazine, stories about people that relate to your magazine  Use quality writing for each page  Use quality design elements:  Appealing Headlines, fonts, pictures, layout  Can use modular design again  If a story, use columns to write.

Page 6- Editor’s Note  Page 6- Editor’s Note  You are the editor.  Letters from the editors sometimes include:  What it was like making this particular issue.  What they thought about meeting the person on the cover (your feature article person)  An interesting story that happened to them that shapes who they are  What their goals are for the magazine  Make editor’s note at least 250 words.  Include pictures with captions.  Use quality design skills.

Page 4- Contents Page  Using examples to understand design layout, create a Contents Page for your magazine.  Do not include titles for ads.  Each story will need on the Contents Page:  Headline for the story  Page number it’s on  Small teaser sentence that summarizes what the story is about.  Include pictures with captions.

Cover- Page 1  Include picture of person interviewed on page 8 &9.  Picture needs to take up the entire page (go all the way to the edge of page)  Over picture, include original name of magazine in neat font  Also include at least 3 teasers for the stories inside the magazine  Teasers need a summary sentence that would make people want to buy magazine to read the story  Use different fonts for the teasers.
