ON THE SPOT! Rules: – One member from each team will come up and take a sound maker. The first to make a sound will have the first chance to answer for a point. – I will need a score keeper that will keep score. – If you are unsafe with the tools you will forefit your spot. – Have fun and use this game to help you study for your test!

Energy can be transformed within a system or transferred to other systems or the environment. Give an example of energy transfer.

Energy can be transformed within a system or transferred to other systems or the environment. Give an example of energy transfer. Burning coal to generate heat which rises and turns a turbine which turns mechanical energy to electrical energy.

Name this part of the wave: # 1 in this picture:

Name this part of the wave: # 1 in this picture: WAVE LENGTH

Waves involve the transfer of ____?___ without the transfer of matter.

Waves involve the transfer of ENERGY without the transfer of matter.

Name this part of the wave: # 2 in this picture:

Name this part of the wave: # 2 in this picture: TROUGH

Light: What is reflection?

It is when light waves bounce off a surface at the same angle that it hit.

Name this part of the wave: # 3 in this picture:

Name this part of the wave: # 3 in this picture: AMPLITUDE

How does sound travel from my voice box to your ear?

My throat passes air past my voice box which vibrates the particles in the air, transferring the energy to my ear.

Name this part of the wave: # 4 in this picture:

Name this part of the wave: # 4 in this picture: CREST

Why is Mr. Walters shirt the color(s) it is?

Because white light is hitting his shirt and absorbing all colors except the color that you see.

Light: What is refraction?

When light changes speed when entering a new medium (such as light bending through water)

What are the units for waves per second?

Waves per second = Hz

Name this part of the wave: If I were to turn up the energy of the wave which part of the wave would increase?

Name this part of the wave: If I were to turn up the energy of the wave which part of the wave would increase? The Amplitude

What is the color spectrum?

ROYGBIV = Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet

Give me an example of kinetic energy

A waterfall, a falling baseball, someone running

Trace the changes of energy forms, including thermal, electrical, chemical, mechanical or others as energy is used in devices: A light bulb

Trace the changes of energy forms, including thermal, electrical, chemical, mechanical or others as energy is used in devices: A light bulb: There are many ways the light bulb could have received its energy. Here is one: The lightbulb gives off thermal and light energy. It received electrical energy from a power plant that converted atomic energy (and heat energy) to electrical energy through a generator.

Give me an example of Potential Energy

A bowling ball resting on a table, food, batteries

Which one of these is an example of conduction? The sun heating the earth A spoon being warmed by a hot bowl of tomato soup A hand melting ice

Which one of these is an example of conduction? The sun heating the earth A spoon being warmed by a hot bowl of tomato soup A hand melting ice

Which one of these is an example of radiation? A camp fire heating your face A goose warming its eggs A dragon breathing fire

Which one of these is an example of radiation? A camp fire heating your face (correct!) A goose warming its eggs A dragon breathing fire <- Dragons don’t exist, silly!

Which of these is an example of convection? A furnace heating a room Boiling noodles Sitting in a hot tub

Which of these is an example of convection? A furnace heating a room Boiling noodles Sitting in a hot tub ALL OF THESE ARE EXAMPLES OF CONVECTION!

Why did we do the activity outside where we walked in a straight line up a hill? What did that describe?

Light passing through an new medium

What type of wave is this?

What type of heat transfer is being displayed above Drago’s cage?

RADIATION! …and Convection I guess, because it is heating the molecules (gas) in the air around it.

Define: Medium

A material (solid, liquid or gas) through which waves or disturbances travel.

What is this part called?

Compression

Define: Energy

The ability to do something/work (move a book, keep you warm, etc.)

What type of wave is this?

Longitudinal Wave

Give me an example of a natural resource

Natural resources occur naturally within environments that exist relatively undisturbed by humanity, in a natural form. Examples of natural resources are air, water, wood, oil, wind energy, hydro-electric energy, iron, and coal.

What are nonrenewable resources?

Oil, Coal, Natural Gas, and Nuclear Energy (uranium) These resources will run out some day. We will use them all up some day.

What is this part called?

Rarefraction

Give me examples of renewable resources.

Renewable resources are natural sources that cannot be diminished. Examples consist of solar, wind, hydroelectric (water falls), biomass (trees) and geothermal (heat from the ground).

Some waves can transfer energy without traveling through a medium Examples are: Visible Light, Microwaves, TV and Radio Signal, X-Rays Waves that do not require a medium are called _____________________

Some waves can transfer energy without traveling through a medium Examples are: Visible Light, Microwaves, TV and Radio Signal, X-Rays Waves that do not require a medium are called electromagnetic waves
