The main character is Esperanza Ortega. She is a 12 year old girl who lives in Mexico. She has all the riches a girl could want. Esperanza thinks she is better than people who are not as wealthy as her.

Esperanza’s uncles destroyed her life by killing Papa, taking over the plantation, and burning her house. She must move away to a new land called California. This forces her to live without the money she once had. Will she be able to survive?

Esperanza meets a girl at work camp, named Marta. She strikes with her friends for better conditions and payments. If Esperanza finds out that if Marta gets caught she will be shipped back to Mexico.

When everyone was on the farm there was a powerful dust storm. Everyone made it back to camp. The problem was the dust storm got Mama really sick. She was so ill she went to the hospital. Esperanza was not able to see Mama for several months. Does she get better? Read the book to find out.
