2 European Qualifications Framework n Aims to develop a European-wide workforce that is mobile and flexible and to aid lifelong learning n Facilitates moving between countries in Europe n Enables comparisons between qualifications in different countries

3 Qualifications and Credit Framework in the UK n Flexible way of recognising and rewarding skills and qualifications n All units and qualification will have credit and a level n Credit may be at Award, Certificate or Diploma level n Will replace Health and Social care National Vocational Qualifications

4 Qualification work streams n Include:- n Preparing for work in the care sector n Physical disability n First aid n Activities organiser n End of life care n Leadership and management in care services

5 National Vocational Qualification in Health and Social care n Levels 2,3 and 4 n Children and young people or Adults n Core and optional units

6 NVQ levels n Level 2 is the National minimum standard n Levels 2 and 3 are for those who provide direct care or supervise and manage others n Level 4 for those who work in senior roles

7 Areas of work for Health care Assistants n Residential n Hospital n Day care n Domiciliary care n In public, private or voluntary sectors

8 Role of Health care Assistants n Washing and dressing n Feeding n Helping people to mobilise n Toileting n Bedmaking n Patient comfort n Monitoring patient’s condition

9 Physiotherapy Assistant n Rehabilitate patients suffering from injury, illness or disability n Help patients with mobility problems n Setting up and maintaining equipment n Keeping records and reporting to Physiotherapists

10 Preparation for Physio Assistant n On the job training n NVQ level 3 in Health: Allied Health professional support n May join the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy for educational facilities n May study for Foundation Degree after experience and become Assistant Practitioner

11 Emergency Care Assistant n Drive ambulances under emergency conditions n Maintaining the ambulance and preventing cross infection n Helping paramedics deal with urgent hospital admissions n Reporting and recording patient information

12 Preparation for ECAs n 9 weeks Intensive Training n First aid n Basic life support skills n Moving and Handling skills n Specialised driving techniques n Transferring patients n Assessed after 6 months

13 Assistant Practitioners n Generic role n Meet the need for Regulation n Not under regulation of Nursing and Midwifery Council n Present HCAs can join Royal College of Nursing

14 Assistant Practitioners n Response to Healthcare employer’s requests for standardisation n Core Standards developed by Skills for Health group n Level of responsibility just below Registered Practitioner

15 Assistant Practitioner n ….Is a worker who competently delivers health and social care to and for people n delivers elements of care previously the remit of professional practitioners n may transcend professional boundaries

16 Foundation Degree Health Care n Generic route for role development in multidisciplinary settings n 2 Year course usually part-time n Based in practice area n No professional body in control n Transferability of role possible n May have a clinical role
