Questions data will answer Who? Who are the students being referred? Who are the teachers referring? Who are the other students involved? Is there a large number of referrals from a small number of students? Who are the people involved in the infractions?

Questions data will answer When? Time of day Day of the week Months with higher referrals Periods before holidays Periods of intermittent school closures due to weather Testing periods When are the infractions occurring?

Questions data will answer Where? Classroom Bus Hallway Cafeteria Gym Lockers Where are the infractions occurring?

Questions data will answer What? Minor or major Bullying Harassment Fighting Disrespect Disruption What are the types of infractions students are being referred for?

Questions data will answer How many? Per day Per month Per grading period Per semester Per year Compared to pervious years How many referrals

Questions data will answer Why? Why are students engaging in inappropriate behavior? Why are teachers referring students? What are the motives behind the behaviors? Do our teachers and staff understand why students misbehave and the appropriate responses?

Questions about data collection Answering the collection questions… Who?When? How?What? How much? Why?

Who collects the data? Someone who has access to referrals and will keep all student information confidential. Most likely, an administrator will be entering discipline data

When are the data collected? Daily discipline entries Data should be entered weekly, at a minimum Data analysis should be part of each month’s ESD team meeting Data should be shared regularly with faculty

What data are collected and how? The Office Discipline Referral (ODR) should be aligned with the student information management system and the Student Code of Conduct Behaviors should have measurable definitions Major v. minor infractions should be clearly defined All data entered should come directly from ODR

Referral process Decide if infraction is major or minor If major, send student with referral (if time) to the office If minor, follow the student conduct form After three minor infractions and appropriate teacher interventions, send referral (not student)

“Student Conduct Form” and “Disciplinary Referral Form”

Student Conduct Form

DISCIPLINE REFERRAL FORM

How much data are collected? How much data is put into the student information system is a division and school decision. The more data we have the more informed decisions we can make!

Why? Decisions made with data (information) are more likely to be implemented and effective Data show trends and patterns in behaviors (both student and teacher) for on- going decision making Data targets areas for improvement Data tells us why we make changes Data provides for professional accountability
