Flag Football Springboro Junior High

Positions Quarterback- The player who throws the ball to other players on the team. Receivers- The players who go out and get open for a pass. The quarterback throws the ball to the receivers. Center- Center- The player who begins play by hiking the ball to the quarterback.

Line of scrimmage: the imaginary line where the ball is placed at the end of each play. Players must line up on their own side of the line of scrimmage EACH play. _____x___x____x___x___ o o o o Lining up to play

When your team is on offense…. Your team is trying to run or pass the ball down the field to make it to the end zone. A player must cross the goal line with the ball in order to score. Scoring in football is called a TOUCHDOWN. Touchdowns are worth 6 points.

Goal Line End Zone

Rules for the offense….. You have 4 chances, or downs, to make it to the first down marker (marked by the teacher) or to score a touchdown. If you earn a first down, you get 4 new chances to make it to the next first down marker. If you don’t make it to the marker or the end zone with your four attempts then the other team will get the ball and become the offense.

Rules for the offense continued…… Attempts to move the ball down the field are called DOWNS. Once you catch a ball from the quarterback you must run with the ball or toss it backwards to someone else. You cannot throw it forward once you are passed the line of scrimmage. Out of your four downs you may only do one running play.

Rules for the defense…… Find a person to guard each play. You are trying to keep them from catching a ball. To tackle a player in flag football, you must pull the person’s flag.

Rules of the defense continued……. The defense should not make any contact with the offense. If contact is made, a penalty will be called. Penalties will result in an automatic first down for the other team. When you pull a flag, drop it right where you pulled it. That is the new line of scrimmage.

Rules of the defense continued……. The defense has one chance to blitz every 4 downs. Blitz: You can try to pull the quarterbacks flag as soon as they call hike (normally you must count 8 steamboats)

Additional terms Interception: When a defensive player catches a pass intended for an offensive player. The defensive player is allowed to run with it and try to score a touchdown. Incomplete pass: When the quarterback throws the ball and it isn’t caught by anyone. The ball is considered dead so neither team can pick it up and run with it. It goes back to the previous line of scrimmage

More additional terms…. Fumble: The player running with the ball drops it. Any player can pick it up and run with it. First Down: It is first down at the start of each possession. It is also first down after a team reaches one of the first down markers.
