3 Prepositions of Place Prepositions of place in English are fairly important in order to define where something is located or something happens. Generally – we mainly use the following ones: IN – ON – AT – BY – OVER – UNDER – ABOVE – BELOW – BETWEEN – AMONG – NEXT TO – IN FRONT OF – BEHIND – OPPOSITE – ON THE RIGHT OF – ON THE LEFT OF – and some others

4 Prepositions of Place On the most common is IN:
we use it to define a specific area or a space IN – countries, continents, large or indefinite areas, cities, towns or villages: - in Africa, in the USA, in France, in the Sahara Desert, in the river/sea, in the field(s), in the garden, in the city centre, in a town, in the country, in the south of Italy… IN – is also used for rooms or spaces within or buildings The kitchen, the bedroom, the living room, … In a shop, in a garage, in a car, in a bank / in a factory, in a classroom, …

5 Prepositions of Place IN also may define a specific place: IN BED
IN PRISON IN A STREET IN THE SKY / THE WORLD IN A NEWSPAPER / A BOOK IN A PHOTOGRAPH / A PICTURE IN A CAR / A TAXI IN THE MIDDLE OF.. She stayed in bed late. He ended up in prison. The homeless live in streets. There are clouds in the sky. She is the best person in the world. I saw it in a book. He found the advert in a newspaper. It is in my car. I left it in the taxi. We live in the middle of nowhere.

6 Prepositions of Place ON usually indicates being on a specific surface or a place: ON A SHELF ON A PLATE ON A BALCONY ON THE (FIRST) FLOOR ON THE GRASS ON THE DOOR ON THE ENVELOPE ON MY NOSE ON HER HEAD ON THE BOTTLE All my books are on the shelf. There a only few peas on my plate . I have my plants on the balcony. We live on the third floor. Don‘t step on the grass! There was no nameplate on the door. Please, stick the stamp on the envelope. Look. There is a fly on my nose. Something white fell on her head. There is a nice label on the wine bottle.

7 Prepositions of Place ON is often used with means of transport.
ON A HORSE ON A BICYCLE ON A MOTOR-BIKE ON A BUS ON A BOAT ON A TRAIN ON A PLANE WARNING!!! IN --- CARS AND TAXIS Who is the woman on the horse? The Chinese carry everything on bicycles. I‘d never sit on a motorbike. There was almost nobody on the bus. A lot of passengers boarded on the plane / train / boat. She forgot her mobile phone in the taxi. Please, sit in the car and drive away.

AT COLLEGE AT UNIVERSITY AT WORK AT A BUS SOP AT A STATION AT AN AIRPORT AT may indicate proximity to a certain place or object. AT A TABLE / WINDOW I am at home, come anytime you want. The kids are at school and my husband is at work, I can take a nap now. After I graduate my college I want to study at university. I will pick you up at the airport. You must wait for your bus at the bust stop behind the corner. She is sitting at the table and doing her homework.

9 OVER – UNDER – ABOVE – BELOW – BETWEEN – AMONG – NEXT TO – IN FRONT OF – BEHIND – OPPOSITE – ON THE RIGHT OF – ON THE LEFT OF The above stated prepositions usually deal with the direct position of an object with respect to the position of the observer or the speaker or other related objects. It is just over your head. Men over 18 must join the army in some countries. -- It is seven above zero. The God above us. It is under the table. I can‘t breathe under water. They were under pressure. His work is a bit below the average. I looked town to the valley below.

Her mother was always between us. The house is hidden among the trees. They talked about that among themselves only. She lives next to me. It is in the house next to. She was standing in the queue just in front of me. They closed the door just in from of us. The garden is behind the house. He ran out of from behind the house. The bank is opposite the café, you must cross the street. She was standing opposite me and looking directly into my eyes. I am in the middle, she is on the right of me, he is on the left.
