7 DEFINITION An endangered species is a native species that faces a significant risk of extinction in the near future throughout all or a significant portion of its range.

8 CATEGORIES Least Concern - There is no immediate threat to the survival of the species. Large mouth valve snail

9 CATEGORIES Near Threatened - May become vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered in the near future. American Bison

10 CATEGORIES Vulnerable - The species faces a high risk of extinction in the wild. Pacific Horned Frog

11 CATEGORIES Endangered - The species faces a very high risk of extinction in the wild. Adriatic Salmon

12 CATEGORIES Critically Endangered - The species faces an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Sumatran Tiger

13 CATEGORIES Extinct in the Wild - The species only survives in captivity, there are no longer any individuals in the wild. Père David's Deer

14 CATEGORIES Extinct - All individuals of the species have died in the wild and in captivity. Great Auk

16 THREATENED Threatened species are any species (including animals, plants, fungi, etc.) which are vulnerable to endangerment in the near future.

37 STEPS TO IMPROVE CONSERVATION Many other similar organizations have been set up to protect endangered wildlife. Some organizations ask for donations or hold fundraisers. Another popular way to raise funds for endangered wildlife is to allow people to be an honorary adoptee to an endangered species.
