1 Thriving, Threatened, Endangered, or Extinct
Kristina Phillips

2 Content Area: Science Grade Level: Grade 3 Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is for students to investigate the populations of different animals and classify them as thriving, threatened, endangered, or extinct. Learning Objective: Given websites about animals, students will investigate the populations of organisms, identify their conservation status, and answer the following PowerPoint questions with 100% accuracy. Content Standard: SPI Investigate populations of different organisms and classify them as thriving, threatened, endangered, or extinct. Accomplishment: Develop an understanding of the terms thriving, threatened, endangered, and extinct. Determine the main causes to the decline in animal species.

3 Review All organisms have basic needs. They need food, water, shelter, and space in order to survive. Human activity is the number one cause to the decline in animal species. Hunting, over-fishing, pollution, habitat loss/deforestation, and decline in prey are examples of causes of the endangerment and extinction of animal species. Thriving is when the species’ population is flourishing. Threatened is when the species’ number decreases steadily. Endangered is when the species is at risk of becoming extinct. Extinction is when the species has died out and there is no more animals of that species alive anywhere in the world.

4 Review Continued Go to the following websites to explore the populations of the listed animals and classify them as thriving, threatened, endangered, or extinct. Baiji Dolphin, Hector’s Dolphin, Panda, Panther, Polar Bear, Quagga, Tiger

5 Which of these animals is extinct?
Polar Bear Quagga Panther Tiger

6 Correct! You got it right!! Quaggas were a species that became extinct in the 1880s.

7 What caused the tigers to become an endangered species?
Hunting Habitat loss Decline in the tigers’ prey species All of the above

8 Correct! You got it right!! Tigers have become an endangered species due to human activities, such as hunting and the increasing demand of developed land for the increasing Asian population. Due to the increase in land development, there is an increasing loss in tigers’ habitat and decrease in the tigers’ prey species.

9 Conclusion We have gained understanding on the differences among the terms thriving, threatened, endangered, and extinct. We have investigated animal species, such as Baiji dolphins, Hector’s dolphins, pandas, panthers, polar bears, quaggas, and tigers. We have also determined the main causes to the decline and extinction of the animal species.

10 Incorrect Whoops, try again! Remember, an extinct species is one that has died out.

11 Incorrect Whoops, look at the answer choices one more time and see if there is any more choices that apply to the question.
