6 Questions How many of you are involved in server management:
specification, installation, provisioning and on-going maintenance? Which of the following are key interests where you work: Reducing time to roll out new servers in response to requests? Reducing costs by better utilizing server resources or right sizing them in the first place? Increasing responsiveness to changes in server landscape: sizing, p2v, v2p etc.? All of the above? How many of you have physical and virtual servers in your environment?

8 Does your infrastructure get in the way of better business outcomes?
Too costly? Sprawl is expensive – virtual servers are growing much faster than physical servers Too time consuming 73% of consolidations took a year or more1 The complexity of today’s IT infrastructure puts pressure on IT as it strives to deliver and even drive the business. Here are some common issues that we hear from our customers The number of virtual servers is expanding very rapidly, because they are so easy and quick to deploy. In fact virtual servers are growing by some estimates at 4 times the rate of physical servers, leading to virtual server sprawl and management complexity and overhead; Infrastructure is costly to manage and underutilized -- average server utilization 5-20% (Source: multiple, commonly accepted industry metric); Infrastructure consolidation projects are time consuming, according to a survey of IT executives and managers, 73% of consolidations took a year or more (Source: How Large Enterprises Approach IT Infrastructure Consolidation Forrester Research, Inc., December 2007 ) The number of servers that are protected by robust HA solutions is actually only a small percentage of the overall server infrastructure, leaving many vulnerable, and leading to unpredictability in terms of service levels and uptime for certain applications. Infrastructure is too energy hungry -- Data center electricity use has more than doubled since 2000 (Stanford Univ. study: Do these concerns resonate with you? Profiles: Historical Utilization Data of Servers Scenarios: Projections and Hypothetical Configurations Servers and Workloads Forecasting Limits Solvers

25 Questions How many of you have server consolidation projects to virtual machines planned or in-progress? Of those doing consolidations, what do you currently use size replacement systems: A spreadsheet? A service from a vendor? Other?

26 HP Capacity Advisor Utilization Calculator
moving workloads adds and subtracts workloads can be multiplied by a constant to reflect expected growth Simple data collection Uses standard WBEM Automatic nightly data collection Integration with VSE features SG failover planning VM planning gWLM estimating Smart Solver Automatically generate plans for consolidation and load balancing Power Planning Estimate the power consumption of different configurations Easy to use The bullet about “Integrates VSE features” may need a little clarification. I think the others are pretty well self explanatory. Capacity Advisor is integrated with Serviceguard (i.e. knows about SG packages), and can track utilization data for these packages across failovers. Therefore, within the “what-if” scenario editor, you can move these packages or workloads to other systems (existing or ones you create in the scenario editor) in order to simulate a failover. The same is true for estimating usage due to resource sharing that is automated by gWLM. Within the scenario editor, you can manually move resources to “simulate” what gWLM would do. Capacity Advisor is different from most other tools that measure CPU utilization data for virtual machines. Capacity Advisor actually tracks the physical CPU usage and not just the “virtual CPU” usage. This allows you to do a much more accurate analysis of VM resource utilization. 26 20 April 2017

27 HP Insight Dynamics – VSE: Capacity planning to optimize utilization
The new math: 8+8 = 12 8 Core Peak Peaks for different workloads do not all happen at the same time. 12 Core Peak Use this version of the slide for an ID-VSE presentation Here two workloads from real production servers are graphed. They both have a peak of nearly 8 CPUs. The graphs are made of about 8000 readings gathered every 5 minutes. The Sum on the right is made by summing the corresponding 5 minute readings. The sum of peaks will always be greater than, or equal, to the peak of the sum. This systematic error can lead to over provisioning. This data is from two actual production systems running inside HP. + = 8 Core Peak Two workloads each have an 8 CPU peak demand but the peak of their sum is 12 CPUs.

31 The New Server Problem Replacing an old server with a new physical server? How long, and how many experts does it take to: lay down an operating system? implement security? install application and configure? quality assurance and validation? Replacing old servers with virtual machines? Does your migration tool support multiple virtualization platforms? Can it migrate a VM back to physical if needed? Do you have time to learn multiple tools? Some reasons why customers don’t leave servers App experts gone Apps are tough to reconfigure

32 HP Server Migration Pack – Universal Edition
SMP Universal meets all your HP ProLiant and BladeSystem migration needs Physical to ProLiant (P2P) New HP ProLiant or HP BladeSystem servers Virtual to ProLiant (V2P) Migrate VMs back to standalone servers Physical to Virtual (P2V) Supports multiple virtualization platforms Virtual to Virtual (V2V) Convert VMs between virtualization platforms Supported Migration Types • Physical-to-ProLiant (P2P) — Migrates a physical machine to a ProLiant server • Physical-to-virtual (P2V) — Migrates a physical machine to a virtual machine within a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 or VMware virtual machine host • Virtual-to-ProLiant (V2P) — Migrates a virtual machine guest within a Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 or VMware virtual machine host to a ProLiant server • Virtual-to-virtual (V2V) — Migrates a virtual machine guest between different virtualization layers, including Microsoft Virtual Server 2005, VMware ESX Server, VMware Server, and VMware GSX Server

33 SMP Universal – How it works
Source Server or VM Destination Server or VM The migration consists of 3 components The central application station The Source server being migrated And the bare metal destination server The migration is as easy (Example of a P2P migration) Install the P2P application on the central application station Run the P2P agent on the source server Boot the destination server with the bootable P2P CD Run the migration wizard from the application station SMP Universal installation and set up takes just a few easy steps: Install the simple, browser based SMP Universal application station. This will be the point at which the user will initiate the migration. SMP Universal can be installed on your HP Systems Insight Manager management server, but does not need to be installed on a server class machine. It can even be run from a laptop. Load the lightweight SMP Universal agent on the source server. This is the physical server or VM host that the migration will be FROM. If the destination server is a new HP ProLiant or BladeSystem server, simply boot the bare metal server with the included SMP Universal Boot CD. No need to install an operating system, application, or security. This can even be done remotely using HP iLO virtual media. If the destination server is a virtual machine, simply load the VM Host SMP Universal agent on the VM host where you want the new virtual machine created. Once an SMP Universal agent is running on the source and destination, a migration can be initiated from the SMP Universal Application. SMP Universal Application Station

34 SIM Integration or Standalone
SMP-Universal can be run as a stand alone utility or invoked from SIM.

42 Questions? ( 1 of ) What Operating Systems are supported with SMP-U?
The currently released version of SMP-U is 3.5. In this version the supported source system OSs are Windows variants, in the case of a VtoX the source VM hosts are VMware, Xen and MS Virtual Server. The OS on the target server (if it exists) is not important because SMP provides a bootable image for its agent on the target. In the case of a migration to VM the supported target VM Hosts are VMware, Xen and MS Virtual Server. For specific details, the quick spec for the v3.5 version of the product is online at

43 Are integrity blades supported as logical servers?
Questions? (2 of Are integrity blades supported as logical servers?   In the current ID-VSE 4.0 release they are not. But the plan is to support them in the next release which is planned for Q109. See you can contact your HP rep for a formal NDA roadmap if you need more details. Note that today Integrity Blades, HP-UX and HP Integrity Virtual Machines are fully supported in the Virtualization Manager and Capacity Advisor components of the ID-VSE 4.0 product

44 Questions? (3 of Can Capacity Advisor work for an all Dell installed base? Used in an on-going fashion CapacityAdvisor is not intended for use with non-HP platforms. The licensing scheme is based on HP platforms and a platform-type check is made in the SIM CMS licensing mechanism when licenses are applied. That being said, CapacityAdvisor does have some low-level mechanisms to import historical performance data that is in ascii format independent of any platform-type labeling. These could be used to do a one time import of historical for purposes of a consolidation project of non-HP platforms to HP servers. Typically in this case, the tool would be used by HP services as part of a project on behalf of a customer. If this is of further interest I suggest you contact me or the local HP services delivery contact in your area.

45 Can virtualization manager be utilized w/o SIM?
Questions? (4 of Can virtualization manager be utilized w/o SIM? Virtualization Manager is only available as a plug in to SIM. The support SIM Server OS options are HP-UX or x86 Windows. Vman itself has no real dependencies in the Insight Control Suite other then SIM. So if you are concerned about a lot of complexity to set Vman up due to the Insight Suite’s size, it isn’t necessarily so.  But Logical Servers requires VMM and VCEM.  Also CapAd would utilizes VMM when gather information about VMware hosts.

46 Questions? (5 of 5) How would be an answer to customer's question - what VSE does offer which is not in Vmware's Vmotion/HA? The short answer is ID-VSE is not a replacement for VMware and its features. ID-VSE adds additional features to a customer’s ProLiant environment with VMware; The ability to view and manage both physical and virtual aspects of your environment from a single interface (Virtualization Manager). From this tool integrated in SIM you get low-level server hardware characteristics and events right up through Virtual Machine visibility and control and everything in between. An integrated full featured, directly accessible to the user capacity monitoring and planning tool – Capacity Advisor. The Capacity Advisor tool works for physical bare-iron server, vm host servers and vms. The ability to “Virtualize” physical blades in an enclosure much in the same way as vms are virtualized on a vm host. This is done using ID-VSE logical servers. When blades are logical servers, they (their context or settings like SAN and MAC addresses) can be templated, assigned, moved, much like a Virtual Machine.
