1 Team: AlphaDroners System: Alpha Drone 1 Strategic Values/Objectives: Unmanned Reconfigurable Adaptable Safe Autonomous/Manual Descriptive Statement: The AlphaDrone is a UAV airborne platform designed for reconnaissance, combat, and transport capabilities. Its design allows for multiple configurations that can be used for various applications. The AlphaDrone allows for remote mission software to be uploaded in mid-flight. AlphaDrones come equipped with autonomous and manual control mechanisms. Team members: Jesse Dimas, Tim Adams, David Waters

6 Reconfigurable Scalable Reusable Self-Contained Units (Modules) Components are distinct, separable, loosely-coupled, self-sufficient units. -Engineers- Hardware - Weapons - Sensors - Cargo Software Plug Compatibility (Facilitated Interfacing) Components easily inserted/removed, component evolution responsibility designated. - Payload Interface Facilitated Reuse Components are reusable and replicable; with responsibilities designated for inventory ready-for-use availability. -Software Flat Interaction Components communicate directly on a peer-to-peer relationship; parallel rather than sequential relationships are favored. -Software Communicates with Hardware -Ground Station communication with Drone Deferred Commitment Component relationships are transient when possible; decisions & fixed bindings are postponed until necessary. - Drone can only take off from a hard surface (for example water take off?) Evolving Standards (Framework) Component interaction standards, responsibilities/processes for evolving the standards. -Military Specifications - Customer Requirements - FAA Regulations - Combat Engagement Rules Redundancy and Diversity Duplicate components provides fail-soft & capacity options; diversity provides functional options. -Mission Type (Drone can function as Recon, combat, or cargo) - Remote manual control can serve as fail soft. -- Fuel tank redundancy Elastic Capacity Component populations and functional capacity may be increased and decreased widely within the existing framework. -Functional capacity is increased because drones can be either recon, cargo, or combat type. - # of weapons payload can be increased or decreased within a given range. Distributed Control and Information Decisions made at point of maximum knowledge; information accessible globally but kept locally. -Unmanned vehicle - Self-Organization Component relationships are self-determined; and component interaction is self-adjusting or negotiated. -Mission plan and Drone type - Hardware and Software interaction is self adjusting. 7 Reality Factors Organizational Behavior – Survival rules rule, nobody's in control... Priority given to contract award amount Lack of man power Union Issues (refusal to work) Human Behavior – Human error, whimsy, expediency, arrogance... Operator Errors (navigating drone) Rushed Support Fatigue Technology Pace – Accelerating vulnerability-introductions, sparse testing... Fast Changing Technoloy Testing Deficiencies System Complexity – Incomprehensible, highly networked, unintended consequences, emergence... High Knowledge/Experience required Complexity of system exceeds end-users knowledge Globalization – Partners with different ethics, values, infrastructures... End-user location Language barriers Other? ? Agile Adversaries/Competitors/Customers – Distributed, collaborative, self organizing, proactive, impatient, innovative... Profit Margin Higher for non-agile tactics (Competitors that are more agile than you are) (Customers demanding more agility that you are able to provide) Creeping Agile Practices – Outsourcing, webservices, transparency, COTS, SOA... End of life for components (Does this really apply here) Parts come from different vendors during different phases of system System: ________AlphaDroners________

9 Team: AlphaDroners System: Alpha Drone 1 Process Steps In “System Detects Hazards”: 1.UAV System is in a functional state. 2.UAV System receives an internal alarm signal. 3.UAV System follows protocol pre-outlined for given alarm. 4.UAV System notifies ground station of alarm. 5.UAV System receives direction from ground station to address cause of alarm. 6.UAV System follows performs actions requested by ground station. 7.UAV System reports status back to ground station.

11 Team: AlphaDroners System: Alpha Drone 1 ISSUE – Fire The Self-contained Units principle contains modular sensors. One type of modular sensor is the fire detection sensor. This sensor informs the UAV System that there is a fire. The Facilitate re-use principle is used because the Hazard Detection Software will be written using modular software. The Flat Interaction principle includes the communication of hardware and software components, as well as the UAV and Ground station communications. Both these communication types are used in the “System Detects Hazards” function. SW communicates with Sensors, and UAV communicates with Ground Station. The Distrubuted Control and Information principle applies directly to the UAV. The UAV is autonomous in many functions, including the fire issue. The UAV has access to all information and will react appropriately. The Self Organization principle is used to help the fire issue by initiating the Hard Control Software. When a sensor is activated, the Software self adjusts where applicable, and then communicates with the ground station for instruction.
