6. HOW CAN WE USE THEM? Use to show a relationship between two things The mountain climber tumbled DOWN THE MOUNTAIN. The relationship between the climber and the mountain.

7. ANOTHER EXAMPLE The shark swam around the ocean, looking for food. The shark swam AROUND THE OCEAN, looking for food. Shows shark’s relationship to the ocean

8. ANOTHER USE Prepositional phrases can be used for sentence variety. Squeaky ran all the way home AFTER DARK. AFTER DARK, Squeaky ran all the way home. END!

9. REWRITE Begin the sentence with a prepositional phrase. Susie and Tim went sledding after school. After school, Susie and Tim went sledding.

10. WRITE YOUR OWN Write a sentence that begins with a prepositional phrase.

12. FIND THE SUBJECT AND VERB The subject of a sentence will NEVER be part of a prepositional phrase. The family (of ants) was busy. Or The family ( of ants ) were busy. The FAMILY WAS busy.

13. FIND THE SUBJECT AND VERB The shelf (of books) was about to fall. or The shelf (of books) were about to fall. The SHELF of books WAS about to fall..

14. FIND THE SUBJECT AND VERB Two pieces of pie were left. or Two pieces of pie was left. Two pieces of pie were left.
