3 Objective: (What You Will Learn) To recognize and write sentences in which the subject and the verb agree in number.

4 What is a Subject? Hey Bob, What is a subject? Nancy, A subject is simply…WHO or WHAT the sentence is about.

5 What is a Subject? So…in the sentence, “You are cool.” The subject is… That’s right, the subject is “You.” The sentence is about…“You.”

6 What is a Subject? And in the sentence, “He is hot.” Well, who is the sentence about? It is about “He.” So the subject is “He.”

7 What is a Subject? Hmmm. Smart and Hot!….Hmmm.. Oh man, I hope I didn’t miss the Seattle Mariners game. Thanks, Bob. No problem, Nancy.

8 What is a verb? Uh…Honey Bunch, What is a verb? I can NOT believe this guy! Baby, a verb is an action word like “eat, kiss, hug, go to, marry”…you know what I mean?

9 What is a verb? Well, what is this “be” verb thing my teacher keeps yapping about? I REALL Ycan NOT believe this guy! Honey, a “be” verb consists of “is, am, are, was, and were.” Where were you in high school?

10 Subject-Verb Agreement Aaagh! What is Subject- Verb agreement? Aaaagh! Oh, brother, not again. You know, I think I remember …

11 Here’s the Idea: A verb must agree with its subject in number.

12 In Number? Number refers to whether a word is singular or plural.

13 Singular A word that refers to one person, place, thing, idea, action, or condition.

14 Plural A word that refers to more than one person, place, thing, idea, action, or condition.

15 Watch Out! Most nouns that end in –s or –es are in the plural form. However, most verbs that end in –s are singular.

16 Singular Subjects Singular subjects take singular verbs.

17 Singular Subjects Maria works cooperatively with her classmates.

18 Singular Subjects She listens carefully to their suggestions.

19 Plural Subjects Plural subjects take plural verbs.

20 Plural Subjects The players work together well as a team.

21 Plural Subjects They listen carefully to the coach.

22 Pronouns and Verbs Singular Plural He, she, or it travels. We travel. You travel. I travel. They travel.

23 Helping Verbs Singular Plural is are does do was were has have
