2 CAREER AT A GLANCE Architects use software to design structures, landscapes, and other projects They also do reports based on their work, such as reporting safety measures and financial issues They communicate with clients as well as contractors

3 MATH CONNECTION Architects use measurements and conversions in planning the dimensions of structures They must know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide distances They must use Pythagorean's theorem to find distances of diagonals Algebra is used to find weights and measurements for floor plans and furniture Algebra is also needed in feasibility reports and audits More math is needed in CADD (computer aided design and drafting) programs they must use

4 HOW TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT Finish high school with at least a B average, and take extra math classes Two options Enroll in a five-year bachelor of Architecture program Get a four-year degree in a related field and then get a two year Master of Architecture degree Intern at architecture firms Get a position as an interim architect before you graduate Take the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) to get your license
